Day 3: Morning

Morning: 6:00am - 12:00noon

[ IRL Timeframe: April 22nd - April 29th May 8th, 2019 ]

It's the third day and, in striking comparison to day two, it is not a bright and sunny morning. The day begins for every hero with an unfamiliar room in an unfamiliar place in an unfamiliar time.

When your characters check their phones, clocks, calendars, or any other timekeeping implement they'll find that the year is 00 AW, forty years before the present day. The year before the Wizard's first game was held, the year before it came down to only two knights and the Princess facing off against the Wizard. It was before all of it.

Everywhere your characters go, there are no people. Their devices will not connect to the internet outside of the island, their companions will not appear, the Protector will not answer, but they can text each other without difficulty. If groups in the same city try to find each other, they will find that some kind of mystical plot barrier is keeping them from finding each other. A wrong turn, a locked door, a lost connection. Somehow, they're kept apart. All the support they have is who they woke up with. Oddly, everyone wakes up in their normal day-to-day clothing rather than pajamas.

There have to be answers somewhere, but where?

Third Morning Event: All Cities: The Past.

The Weather

  • Eerily still.
  • 64°F / 18°C
  • The trees are unmoving, there is no wind.

Prompts:

  • 6:30am Spa Hotel, Bamborough: Two sets of heroes wake up in the Spa Hotel in Bamborough. Garrot wakes up in the same room as Olivia. On the far side of the Spa hotel, in one of the waterfront cabins, Haizea and Joanna wake up in the same room. The hotel is empty, but every room is unlocked. Food's still in the dining areas, too. Oddly, things look like they were in use around the Hotel. Carts in the middle of hallways, half-eaten meals on tables, bags halfway up staircases. Odd.

  • 6:30am Lodge Cots, Craydon: The Craydon lodge isn't much, but it's a spanning complex of cabins that maximize occupancy by filling them with cots for that "outdoor camping" experience. Rory and Gail will wake up in one of the cabins near the base of the mountain. On the furthest edge of the lodge, Gyre and Seth will wake up in their top-level cots higher up the mountain. There are a few campfires going with meat roasting over them, piles of raw meat to the side ready to cook, and various festivities left laying around. It's almost like everyone up and left all at once, but where did they go?

  • 6:30am Cozy Inn, Far Haven: Far Haven's 'Cozy Inn' promises the 'small town feeling' in the middle of the big city. The inside is exactly that, a very cozy little hotel with three floors of rooms and a covered walkway with a glass floor over a garden into another section of the hotel. Zafika and Web will wake up in a room on the first floor nearest the train station exit of the cozy inn. No doors are locked here and it looks as if things were left strewn about like the people just teleported out of here. Terrence, Matilda, and Luka wake up in the glass walkway above, in sleeping bags. They'll find that the only way out goes to the cozy inn's far building, they'll have to go through a spanning cafeteria space with tons of empty tables that, strangely, look like they were just in use. Plates with half-full, or even untouched plates sit around on every table and there are even jackets draped over some chairs, purses on the ground. The city outside is much the same, vehicles just stopped in the middle of the street with no drivers, things dropped on the ground. What happened...?

  • 9:30am, Exploration, Bamborough, Craydon, Far Haven: The scene is much the same in all three cities. When the heroes make their way outside, they'll notice that the sky above Harsen Island is a massive vortex centered over the mountain in the middle of the island. Heroes in Craydon will get to see it a little closer, the massive clouds occasionally crackling with blue lightning. All three cities have glowing cracks in the ground in various places, the cracks lead all around, some larger, some smaller, maybe there's something to be found? There are large glowing obelisks that are floating over each city and outside of them, they occasionally float down near the ground enough to touch or look closer at. Once the heroes make their way out into the streets, they might start seeing glimpses of a Wizard hat in the distance but each time it passes behind a wall or into shadow and is gone. Maybe they can catch up? Maybe your hero takes a moment to search through local news, the paper, letters, a television station. What's going on in the city right now?

He notices the presence of another quickly -- that feeling of being watched coming over him, a skin-crawling feeling that would make his hair stand on end if it hadn't already been from the latent electricity in the air.

Luka turns in the direction of the scraping sound. He's trying not to panic, imagining all the many things that could be its source. He wants to believe that perhaps it's just the child he'd heard earlier playing games with him, but deep down he knows that presence is not that of a child. It's far too imposing.

"Hey," Luka says, hiding his unease from his voice. He takes a defensive step back, but keeps one hand on the stone wall. If it was a door, maybe it could be his escape. "Who are you? What's going on?"

He watches them closely as they try to speak, trying to pick up any words he might know from the shape of their mouth. He can't though. It's all nonsense to him, right up until they point up the mountain and look at him.

"Would you like to go that way? We can go together," he says, hopping into the crack in the ground and climbing up onto the other side beside them. He offers his hand, smiling softly at them.

"If you can sign, I'll understand you."

"Hah!" Luka nearly snort-laughs, his tone indignant, when he's offered the proposal.

"Sweetie, I wouldn't be where I am if I just signed any contract without reading the fine print. Or any of the print at all. I don't even know what you're offering me." His words are bold, but one hand is still feeling the smooth stone of the wall for any kind of way through.

The stranger's cold breath against his skin only quickens the pace of his searching and the desperation Luka feels for some way out of the encounter. He tries knocking on the door --- maybe someone was inside? Anything was worth a shot.

Well... he does look away eventually. He's watching them closely for a good few minutes, waiting for them to take his hand. Lowering his hand when they don't. Pursing his lips when they just stay silent and still.

Finally he glances up towards the mountain again, wondering what he's missing. There has to be something, right?

He's absolutely unprepared when he looks back and the kid is gone, jumping in surprise. His eyes dart around him, trying to find where this kid could've gone in such a short amount of time.

"Hey! Kid!" he shouts, beginning to jog slowly around the area. He looks behind the buildings and down alleyways, finally coming to a stop when he realizes that they're just gone...? A ghost? He doesn't understand, glancing down at the hand he had offered to the kid.

He has to keep making progress, he decides. Hopefully he can find the kid... or the kid is somewhere safe? He doesn't know. All he knows is he's going to turn right back around, and start towards the cabins and then keep going, up into the mountains.

Geez they're fast! But also, can't the Wizard just, like... Teleport to wherever they're going, anyway? Or at least do that creepy Weeping Angel zip. The city is empty right now, and with how quickly they're going it doesn't seem like sightseeing, so...

Terrence eventually slows, looking around at the various stalls curiously. Surely the Wizard knows they're being followed, yes? So maybe they're leading him somewhere specific. Aside from ground zero on W-Day, anyway - is there something important he's supposed to see here? Well the food certainly seems like it'd be pleasant enough if there were anyone around to actually make it, under different circumstances...

Might as well look around. It's not like he's going to catch up and yelling questions never goes anywhere with her.

I doubt a bottle is going to be more dangerous than the Wizard. [ Garrot scoffs at the notion, but of course she does have a point. What if one of these opened in the middle of a building? Or the ocean? All sorts of things could fall in.

But when Olivia chooses to get closer, to touch the weird glowing magic fissure, Garrot can't help but worry and scoot himself next to her. Good call on his part, since magical energy runs through her. ]

Shit! Are you okay?! [ The words are sharp, and he takes a few steps back, looking ready to charge her and knock her away from the weird crack in the ground. Garrot has no idea if this stuff works like normal electricity, but he'll forcibly remove Olivia if that's what it takes to keep her safe!! ]

Zafika stops when they see that obelisk, and the first thing that comes to their mind when they see it, is that they really, really want to follow it. They want to follow it so bad, but they still want to see where this wind is coming from and they can't do both at the same time.

But there's also two Knights here. They don't want to split up, that's the worst decision ever, in anything and everything that could be dangerous, but curiosity is eating them alive. "Hey, Web... I'm not the only one seeing that obelisk, right?"

They wait for a confirmation, before they speak again. "What do you think we should do? Floating, moving obelisks aren't normal, but... neither is this wind. Do you want to risk splitting up?"

[personal profile] spookyroomba 2019-05-08 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Web shakes their head and confirms what Zafika is seeing. "Yep, that's a floating obelisk. If you're seeing things, I'm seeing things too."

At the suggestion to split up, Web shakes their head again, hard enough this time to make their ears flap a bit. "Bad idea. Going off alone is how you get dead. Though both of these things are interesting...hmmm. Got a coin or something we can flip to decide?"

It seems like a reasonable enough solution to them.

[personal profile] zafika 2019-05-08 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay, if we both see the same thing then I doubt we're hallucinating..." Besides, Zafika can't notice any other symptoms that would go with hallucinogenic poisons or drugs.

They are glad that Web agrees on splitting up being a bad idea, because nothing good would come out of that. "Yeah, absolutely not splitting up, we don't know what's going on nor do we know if we could regroup again...."

Flipping a coin however? Well, that's not exactly ideal for Zafika. So, instead, their tail grabs a regular dagger from their bag, and they carve a big 'X' onto the ground next to where they're standing. "Okay, obelisk first... we might lose sight of it if we don't hurry and I want to know what's going on with it... we can try looking for the source of this wind afterwards, but at least we know for sure that it's coming from the mountain."

[personal profile] spookyroomba 2019-05-08 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Web nods at this solution to their problem, while also gesturing at a nearby tree. "Mind marking that tree, too? A mark on the ground is fine, but it might get blown away. A backup wouldn't hurt - just a line, and we'll be off."

They keep their eyes peeled for any notable terrain features, as well, just to be on the safe side.

[Web's trying to find landmarks so they don't get lost!]

Luka feels his heart jump when he runs his hand over the keypad. Sure, it's barely there, but it's better than nothing. He begins mashing the keys in indiscriminate order, hoping to stumble onto the passcode with random, dumb luck. Why couldn't this just be a handle?! he thinks, barely containing a groan.

He continues attempting passcode combinations with one hand, hoping the... Wizard? doesn't find it offensive or grounds for some kind of retaliation.

"Well, are you going to explain yourself?" Luka asks.

Towards the obelisk. He had seen them earlier in town, but never close enough to bother moving towards them. The air in the mountain is so utterly unpleasant that he's almost looking for a chance to stop climbing upwards, and then there's an obelisk right there. It's like it's asking him to come look.

He will oblige it, turning on his heels and darting through the trees to catch it before it's gotten too far away.

"Wait!" he shouts, just to see if it has any kind of intelligence or if it's programmed to listen to commands. The more he learns the better, though he will catch it soon even if it doesn't stop.

His growing frustration only escalates with the sudden appearance of the child again. Punching in numbers is making itself increasingly clear that it will not be a viable option. The Wizard hasn't moved or communicated. And now the kid is back.

"I don't know them, and they're being VERY RUDE, if I may say." Luka says between clenched teeth.

He feels like a cornered animal and all his instincts are telling him to just run, now. And he would, if the ground weren't laden with electrified cracks.

"Hey, kid, do you know a way out of here, by any chance?" he finally asks.

"Fuck--" he yelps, stumbling to the side as he jerks his head towards the voice. He very nearly falls, catching himself on a tree as he looks around. What the fuck is all this honestly. He really expects to see the messy kid from earlier followed him, but then there's nobody there and he just stops. Straightens up.

"Hello...?" he asks the fuckin clear air, his voice cautious and soft. He waits for an answer for as long as he can, his hands tightening into fists and then loosening again, over and over.

The second the obelisk moves past his peripheral vision though, he turns and continues after it. He can interrogate the wind later!!!
