When Garrot wants to pay attention, like when someone he cares about explodes into water and is actually perfectly fine, he's decently perceptive. Naturally, he picks up on that excitement, the immediacy of the response, and the doctor is morbidly amused that their first casual, non-disastrous outing could involve testing weird, magical fissures. Unless something weird happens and one of them gets hurt. What if they get teleported halfway into a tree?!

"We gotta climb the mountain so we can do science on the way down, you know." Garrot's a little cheeky with that remark, hoping to distract Zafika from the cracks long enough for them to make more progress... even though part of him wants to stop and test the cracks out now.
