As the monster begins twisting out another answer, Joanna takes a moment to look around. One some level she's expecting to see another monster trying to get the jump on her, or the Wizard with a camera filming a practical joke, or... something. But there's nothing like that. She's just having a friendly chat with one of the monsters.

By and large, when she's considered the question at all, she's settled on them being constructs of magic along the lines of lethal training programs, obstacles created by the Wizard to test the Knights. Not... people.

But the answer on the etch-a-sketch doesn't match that at all, and she frowns as she rereads it a few times. Such ordinary activities.

"It sounds... as though you have a whole life, outside of this contest by the Wizard. I can't say I expected that... Could you tell me, please - why do you fight?"

It's easy to understand her own motivations. For the knights it's simple - if they don't, the Wizard will destroy the world, killing everyone in it. If the monsters are people, and they live here... It's not like ordinary wars from before, squabbling over territory. It's a question of destruction or preservation.
