It's on his way out from diligently people watching on his bench that he passes the diner. He'd seen something about something happening here, and curiosity makes him pause and peer into the window.
The child catches his eye immediately with that giant stack of plates and the way the waiters don't quite seem to know what to do with them. He pauses there outside the restaurant, hoping briefly that he's caught the end of the meal and they'll come walk out where he can talk to them in the air like a normal person. A second later, a waiter walks out with another plate, and he sighs deeply. Resolves himself to go into this stupid building.
And then he forces himself to enter, ignoring the waiter who tries to seat him, and walking right up to the kid's table. He pauses there... and then sits in the booth opposite them. He watches them for a moment, glancing at the dirty plates they've already been through. He uh actually has no idea how to start this conversation. Hello child.
