Matilda.

If this was tabletop, that was a natural 20 roll.

Seven stops dead in their tracks, eyes locked on Matilda. They let out a shaky breath, black steam pouring out of their body like it had been compressed in a balloon. The only thing still moving now is the goop steadily pouring off of them.

"k̷̥͋̈́͗́́͛̐̒̕̚͝N̸̹͔͈̮̘̩͉͎͔͌̄̅͗ͅi̶̥͖̙͖̰̱̣̗͕͇̘͆̎̊̚g̸̨̨̛̛͙̱͓͇͓̫͂̈́͆͌̈́́͊̈̄̔͘͘H̶͙̗̞̹̟̻̥͓͚̭̗͎̀͊̿͗̒̆̎͒̐̄̚͜͝͝t̵̯̘̜̃̂̾̉̕.̵͈̞̻͍̖̬̰͔̳͕̬̈́̊̑͌̔̀̍͂͐̕͜͠.̴̢̢̟͎̮͔̲͚͉͎͓̳̿̈́͜,̷̛͍͉̼̫͕̊͌̂͂̀̑͆̃͘ ̶̩̦͚̖̰͇͇͙͎̥͓̭̉̈̈͂́̾̀̂̈̄͜͠g̸̢̡̨̡̥̖̙͈̞̻̔͆̏̅͆̄̂̆̾́̾̕͜ȯ̷̤͓̙͖͓͖̱͇̭̜̣̼̪͍̈̈̍̿̎͊͝͝O̸͉̥͔͍͕̻͂̓͑̓D̶̜͋̒̑͘ ̴̭̲̙̩̱̫̝̥̤̝̟͎̊͋́́̿̄̒̃̐͊̀͘͝͝ͅͅ" Their voice comes, quieter, but absolutely like a deep voice with a mouth full of marbles. The distortion is louder than the words, it's hard to make out.

But it doesn't really matter, because they're not staying long enough to clarify. The ground in front of them shimmers and flickers, reality popping like bubble wrap downward and out. The resulting hole looks dark, like they're going somewhere hidden, and they fall forward into it. Their momentum carries them through the hole, and all that rises up after they fall is a small wisp of black smoke.

And then the ground is ground again, the hole vanishing.

Oddly, if Matilda made any attempt to teleport into that dark space she'd find that she couldn't.

Like something was blocking her way.

How?
