This is a bewildering way to answer his question! To the point where he feels like he's going insane for a second. Have fish always been able to live if you ripped all the flesh off them? Has he been killing them beforehand for no reason?? That can't possibly be true!! His gaze flicks from Five to the Wizard and back again, his certainty faltering because the Wizard hasn't said anything to correct Five. This is a baffling experience, and he forces himself to bend down and collect the fish off the ground before he says anything else.
The meat certainly feels like fish, even if it doesn't smell quite right. He starts to brush some of the dirt off, trying to figure out what else to even say. Does she not understand how weird this is? Maybe that's it...
