The shield is there again as the doll draws back and tries to strike him again. He takes note of the fact it just struck again as if it is completely brainless, and he yanks the spear out of its body.

He retreats once he has it free, ducking back across the platform and waiting to see what it'll do next. If his growing suspicion is true and this thing will just strike blindly until its been killed, then he can plan out how to make this look as impressive as possible for the camera.
