Day 2: Evening

Evening: 5:00pm - Midnight

[ IRL Timeframe: April 14th - April 22nd, 2019 ]

Unfortunately for everyone, the second day's events are far less rewarding than the first day's. Now that things are starting to get real, there are consequences for what's taken place. Both monsters caused a bit of damage and a mess with their departure, but the locals on the island are trying to stay positive. Sometimes things just get messy, they've dealt with this for forty years it's fine.

But the heroes are sure to have a lot on their mind. Injuries mean it's less of a game and more likely to sink in as real. How will your hero cope tonight? The Princess and her two knights are due for a rendezvous with the Protector and, on the other hand, there are some evil-allured knights due for some private time with the Wizard. What will come of that?

The Weather

  • Still.
  • 61°F / 16°C
  • An eerie calm has fallen over the island.

Prompts:

  • 05:00pm Clean-up Crews: Both Bamborough and Craydon were left with big neon-green splashes of blood that aren't going to just wash off. Numerous locals in both areas are hard at work cleaning up after the second monsters, scrubbing at buildings and assessing the damage to the island. In Bamborough, the locals are hard at work trying to salvage the damage to the boardwalk or put up caution tape around the destroyed areas. Is your hero lending a hand in all this? Is someone else helping? Bond over picking up the pieces, but hey... it could be worse, right?

  • 5:30pm, Craydon: Despite being largely untouched by the monster's arrival, the citizens of Craydon have dropped by the train station to check in on the heroes. Anyone in the area will be given a small care package of items and offered a free coupon for any restaurant in the area. Will your hero go alone and run into someone who was craving the same food they were, or will they team up with their fellow heroes to drop by a restaurant together? Everyone needs to unwind, after all!

  • 5:30pm, Bamborough: Despite the boardwalk damage, the Bamborough oceanfront diner is offering 'monster margaritas' tonight. They're set up as an open-air bar tonight, doors and windows open to let in the cool sea air. Every hero gets their first monster margarita free if they can stomach the bright green color, and they've got deep fried bar foods for half off. Come in, indulge, have a drink to get your mind off of the events of the day, heroes!

  • 5:30pm, Far Haven: The Far Haven clinic has advertised that its doors are open to any hero injured, or just in need of a check-up, for the rest of the evening. They want to check in on all the heroes and make sure they're okay. Did your hero come alone and run into someone here? Or did they come together to get stitched up? Or maybe they just need to be reassured that everything will be okay.

  • 8:30pm, 9:05pm, 9:40pm, Train station(s): As always, Social media is incredibly quick to report Wizard appearances. At 8:00pm they report that the Wizard is waiting for the train in Bamborough station. She does, in fact, board the train at 8:30pm and they start theorizing where her destination is. Social media points out that her train will be arriving in Craydon at 9:05pm, then it will get to Far Haven by 9:40pm. If a hero tries to find her when the train arrives back in the Bamborough station at 10:15pm, though, the train will be empty. Where will your hero find her? Bamborough between 8 and 8:30pm? On the train in Craydon at 9:05pm? Or when she disembarks in Far Haven at 9:40pm?

"Thanks!" His spongey ego absorbs the compliment effortlessly. "Most of the spices were here when I got here, so whoever actually lives here is responsible." That's a bit of a lie, because he still cooked the food and bought extra spices. But they're supposed to be relaxing, so his ego can go back to its cave for a bit.

"It's called paella, it's from..." He pauses for a moment, blinking his eyes as he realizes he has no idea. "...Somewhere. It's just a rice dish with some veggies, shrimp, and lobster on top." And he sets the pan down in the middle of the table on a wooden trivet. Clonk! But then he starts to head back into the kitchen, because-

"Do you want water, wine, beer, or, like... chocolate milk?" This is the closest he'll get to calling them kid.

Zafika humms quietly, glancing towards the kitchen and, pauses for a moment. Is, is that... golden-bronze glitter everywhere? Yeah they're starting to have more and more questions honestly. Unfortunately they're not the one who'll be asking questions tonight. Probably.

They tilt their head like a curious cat at Garrot's explanation, and eye at the paella a bit more. Okay, shrimp is familiar, but lobster? Absolutely not. They assume it's a more luxurious option for seafood. "Huh... okay, that definitely sounds good." Luckily they're everything but picky about their food.

At the suggestion of chocolate milk they squint at Garrot, and actually get close to eye contact before their eyes flick elsewhere. "Alcohol doesn't mix well with me, just water is enough. Oh, talking about that, I, was given a little care package in Craydon that has a bottle of handcrafted beer... do you want that? I'd feel bad throwing it away just because I don't drink alcohol."

[personal profile] daddykong 2019-04-17 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"You brought a gift? How thoughtful!" Garrot chuckles before heading back into the kitchen. "You know," There's the sound of the fridge opening, and then water pouring into a glass. "I haven't gotten any gifts yet, I'm a little jealous!" And if Zafika is paying attention to the glitter, they'll notice it's suddenly gone, as if it never even existed.

Garrot returns to the dining room with a glass of water and a pitcher with more. And a chocolate milk mustache that his tongue just disposes of, like a dog. There are also some faint sparkles on his shoulder. The glass is casually placed down at Zafika's end of the table, with just a chipper little "Here you go!" before he sits back down where he was earlier. He is either oblivious or apathetic as he starts to scoop servings of the dish onto Zafika's plate, and then his own.

"Well, I, was hoping you'd like the beer. So I'm relieved you do. Apparently all the Knights in Craydon were given a care package like that. Or, well. The ones the locals could find at least." Zafika listens to the noises coming from the kitchen, but don't focus that much because they notice that the glitter is gone! What the hell? Glitter should be impossible to get rid of that fast. They spilled a bottle of it when they were four and ten years later they still kept finding glitter all over their childhood home!

And then they note the sparkles on Garrot's shoulder, and their curiosity is eating them alive, they have to ask about it. "Oh, thank you, I could've.. done that myself but, thank you." A pause, and they glance at that sparkle and yeah they absolutely have to ask. "Okay I don't know if I should be asking this but... what the hell was up with that bronze flash in your kitchen? And all the glitter that just, disappeared suddenly? Is your Knight power just, limitless creation of glitter?"

Garrot sees an opportunity here. An opportunity to be capricious and silly and, well, mess with an uptight assassin. He wants to get maximum shock value out of this, so he puts on his doctor-delivering-bad-news face and concocts some bullshit that he... might've already rehearsed just to mess with someone.

"It's a skin condition." He stands up and shakes his hair a bit, and there's more fucking glitter. His hair's pretty close to his shoulder after all! But then he starts to walk around the table as he explains this complete and utter lie. "See, my father's kinda bugbear is built for colder climates, so my skin gets all flaky when I'm down here where it's all hot and humid. Wanna see?" Then he brings his thumb to his middle finger as he gets closer to Zafika, like he's going to rub them together but instead he snaps them, there's a few little golden-bronze sparkles, and-

"It's pretty gross, really." The voice is not coming from Garrot, it's coming from Zafika's other side. But it's still Garrot. Because there's two of him, and they're casually flanking Zafika's seat, just chillin'. But the new one keeps talking, outlined in the faintest particles of that same golden-bronze color. "Have I mentioned I really like the color of your hair? Because it's great."

Seeing Garrot's expression change makes Zafika frown, they haven't seen that kind of expression on his face before, they don't know if this is going to be something bad. But they do know that they're instinctively getting ready for something to happen.

At the explanation of it being a skin condition, they now squint at Garrot too, because like hell that's a skin condition. That's glitter, not flaky, dead skin. Their eyes remain on him, and they turn their body a little so they're facing him the entire time, watching every movement closely. And as he gets closer, they lean back instinctively, personal space please!

And then there's a second voice coming from behind them, andd they get that feeling of their heart sinking when something bad happens. Their training and instincts kick in, because something, or someone, is suddenly behind them, and that means danger, it has always meant danger, and it's bad, and they need to act. Right. Now.

So the moment they hear that voice, they jump into action, not stopping to realise that it sounds very familiar, if just different, because right now they're not thinking. In an instant they're up from the chair and turn around as their tail snaps around the second speaker's neck, tightening there and then yanks hard to pull them down on their knees. And once they're on Zafika's level, they give this hostile, bit feral hiss as the scales on their tail bristle, and in that moment they look the 'threat' in the eyes, their own flashing with a bright glow and.

The person in a tail choke-hold starts to turn to stone in a matter of seconds, the change starting with their eyes and quickly spreading to the rest of their body. Once the threat has been dealt with, Zafika loosens their tail from around their neck. And realise that. This is Garrot. A second Garrot, because there's still the one who had been talking bullshit about skin condition. But either way, this is Garrot, and they turned him to stone. And you wouldn't think it could happen since they don't have human skin, but they go pale as they realise what they've done, and take a step away from the stone-Garrot. "Shit- I, fuck I didn't, I'm sorry I wasn't supposed to do that-"

The concept academically known as the Garrot Moment™ is a uniquely hazardous phenomenon caused by proximity to one Dr. Hruggarrot Murtakhor. They are classified by the magnitude of his facades, his plans, and his jokes and the desire to see them all through to completion, and the consequences of them overpowering his rational mind.

This is the third worst Garrot Moment™ in recorded history.

It is truly a bizarre experience to feel and see something coil around your neck, even though you know nothing is there; to feel your body and center of gravity be pulled down, when you are still upright; to watch and feel your body turn to stone, when it is not your own. Garrot's body, the animate one, it radiates with a heaviness and a burn, as if his muscles were pushed to their very limit while he was drowning.

But he knows what he has to do. What deserves to happen to Zafika.

As the assassin steps closer to him, all the negative emotion in their voice, Animate Garrot moves slowly, deliberately, as if he were breaking free from the petrification's hold. Because his body is halfway unconscious. He reaches a hand gently but powerfully, as if strength was the only way he could move right now, and clasps it on their shoulder.

Then there's a squeeze, the claws dig in just a little, enough to show he's serious, and Garrot starts to turn the assassin to face him, and only him, as he speaks through gritted teeth, "Look! At! Me!" It's forced out like a dying order, from a face that's shocked, torn, hurt, scared.

It isn't until Zafika directs their full attention to him that Garrot focuses everything he has on making that clone dissipate, sending a gentle burst of golden-bronze glitterdust... and regular dust into a surprisingly stable pile where the clone was before, like he just... fell apart.

And then suddenly, with the speed and precision of a highly trained martial artist and surgeon who has regained full use of his physical and mental faculties, Garrot just snatches Zafika up into a hug despite literally gasping for breath.

The thing about any severe Garrot Moment™ is that they usually end with him feeling terrible.

If feels like time has slowed down, as Zafika watches the second Garrot turn to stone, and they feel sick, because they just did the thing they had just yesterday told Garrot they refused to do. And yet, there they went, doing it anyway despite having said all that.

Then there's a hand on their shoulder, and claws dig into their skin through their knit sweater, and it does not help them relax at all, they're still wound up, every part of their body tense as they remain ready to do, something, anything, honestly. Anything except run away, not that they could, with how Garrot is gripping onto their shoulder and turning them around.

When they look at him, it feels like a punch in the gut, seeing all those emotions, that shock, how he's hurt and torn, and how he's scared because who wouldn't be? If he can feel what's going on with the second him, they can't imagine how terrifying that must feel.

They feel something's off with the petrifying Garrot, and almost glance back to him, but then they're snatched up into a hug, their face ending up against the original Garrot's chest, and they freeze. They're still tense as they can be, and they feel disgusted over what they did, but now there's a pair of strong arms around them, and warmth surrounds their torso. So they force themselves to take a deep breath, and exhale it as a deep sigh as they make themselves relax, resting their forehead on Garrot. They don't dare to hug him yet, but they're not refusing the physical contact either. "I'm sorry. I, didn't mean to do that to you. I apologise." They don't expect him to forgive them, but they need to apologise either way.

[personal profile] daddykong 2019-04-19 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
For a few moments, Garrot just breathes, appreciating that his neurons are all firing, that he could still stand, still think straight, still breathe. That was one field test of his powers that he never expected to get, and never wanted to repeat.

"You should never want to feel scared around me, Zafika." The words are soothing, gentle, and the closest thing he'll get to apologizing, and his arms wrap around them a little tighter.

"You need to break that habit. Now." And now he's slid into a stern parent voice, with one hand gently rubbing against their back. "There are civilians, fans, the other Knights, and the Princess!" And then he just sighs, breaking the hug and stepping back a bit so he can cup their face in his hands and look as close to those eyes as he can get as his tone turns grave.

"If you ever hurt anyone like you hurt me there, you will never see the sunlight again." It's an admonishing, a warning, and a threat all in one. But he sighs again, and just looks towards the floor.

"Is... is it okay if I get angry?" He takes another deep breath. "Not like yesterday, I just... I need to get what happened off my chest so I'm not giving you funny looks through dinner." You literally petrified him and he sounds like he wants to try and let it go, Zafika. Garrot must really want to share this dinner with someone.

[personal profile] zafika 2019-04-19 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The soothing, gentle words and Garrot's arms tightening around them causes a little lump to form in Zafika's throat, and they know what that's a sign of, and they hate it, they don't like it that it's there because they refuse to let what follows that to happen.

They know they need to break this habit, but it's hard, especially when their life is at risk every single day on this island, after years of having to be careful so people don't ambush them and kill them. It's why they'd rather avoid the other Knights, but they know they can't, so they try to be careful. But someone suddenly appearing behind them without any sign or sound? That'll spook everyone.

When Garrot breaks the hug and steps back, they expect him to want to put distance between them. But instead he cups their face and go as close to eye contact as he can, at least until they avert their eyes and try to turn their head away, this uncomfortable feeling settling in their chest. "I'm aware of that. And I don't want to hurt anyone." Anyone except the Wizard and her monsters.

But then he asks if he can get angry, and they look astonished, and for a moment are stuck speechless. He's, asking them if he can get angry...!? They thought he'd just tell them to leave! "Garrot, I literally petrified your... clone, you have every right to get angry. Anyone wouldn't even ask they can get angry. What I did is unacceptable, I'm not going to tell you not to do that."

"Tch." Garrot just moves into a quiet snarl while one arm moves to separate Zafika from the table. They said it was okay, so one fist pulls up, knuckles aimed right towards the table, and as he lets out a yell two fists come down. He didn't move the other one, it's still acting like a barrier. Garrot just cloned himself and stacked his punches. The barrier arm moves up to put itself between the table and Zafika's eyes in sync with the splintering crack causing a third of the table to just... dangle awkwardly over the ground.

"What the FUCK is wrong with you?!" Garrot Prime is yelling, almost volcanic. The clone takes a moment to do a double take at the now-mangled table, clearly in shock, before getting with the program and just glaring. He did ask if it was okay first.

"Do you have any idea what'll happen if the others find out you came into my home for dinner and attacked me, tried to fucking kill me?!" Garrot Prime's arms are gesturing into the air, while the clone's are crossed at his chest. It obviously wouldn't be good for Zafika, considering he'd used public perceptions to coerce them into cooperating the day before.

"Since this is gonna be our little secret, I'm telling you how that felt." Garrot scoffs, because this goddamned assassin. "You probably know that when a Basilisk petrifies someone, their mind and body are basically frozen in time." He nods with a condescending sneer; of course the doctor knows this. "But when you petrified me, I mean, him," Garrot gestures to his clone. His clone waves calmly.

"It felt like my heart stopped beating, like my blood stopped flowing. Like my joints locked up and my muscles calcified. Like every single nerve ending was on fire and my lungs were filled with water. But then it was fine." The pair rolls their eyes, and Garrot Prime extends a finger that he begins moving back and forth like a switch. "It switched back and forth and back and forth until the clone was gone."

"It was terrible, and I want to break your neck right now!" The clone is eager, grinning ear-to-ear as it says that with more than a little bloodlust. Garrot Prime just exhales through his nose, and the clone disappears in a small puff of golden-bronze glitter. He doesn't seem bothered by what he just heard, and that's because-

"He's right, you know." Garrot finds himself sighing, unable to even look at the Snake Knight until all of a sudden he is. "The stupid, angry, primal part of my brain wants to kill you. Like how yours grabbed me." A beat. "The smart part of my brain wants to sit down and talk about that like calm, reasonable adults." And he's smiling, all kind and polite like an excited host. He claps his hands together, forcing away his violent frustrations.

"But that doesn't fucking matter, here's what is going to happen:" Garrot giggles, almost like he wasn't just in excruciating pain caused by someone he wanted to trust. "You are gonna catch your breath and move all our dinner stuff to the living room, on the table next to that comfy couch." And then he points through a nearby doorway before taking two steps towards the stairs.

"And I am gonna meditate upstairs until you gimme a shout when everything's ready!" He takes a breath, and his eyes turn serious. "Don't worry, you're always safe in my house."

Then he turns to the stairs, quickly stomp-stomp-stomping his way up them while shouting "Besides, if I wanted to kill you, you'd be dead already!"

And that damaged chunk of table wood finally detaches and thuds into the floor.

Garrot's arm doesn't even get to touch them, because Zafika is taking several steps away from the table -and through that, Garrot- all on their own accord, that snarl is, giving them a bad feeling about what's to come. For a good reason apparently too, because then Garrot yells and there's another of him too as he punches at the table with a strength that leaves a third of the table dangling over the floor, and while the rest of them manages to remain controlled, their head flinches to the side as they close their eyes, they don't want splinters in them, no matter how much they right now hate the power in their eyes.

And then they open their eyes again and he's yelling, and they force their tail to remain behind them instead of curling around their leg, their hands squeezing at the sleeves of their sweater as they just, look just a little bit towards the floor, they can't make themselves look at Garrot directly. Just like he said, this isn't like what happened with the Wizard, yet this manages to be worse. Because the anger is directed at them, and rightfully so, meaning they don't get to try and defend themselves, there's nothing they could even say to make it any better. They hurt him, they deserve whatever he's going to do now.

And oh are they ever so glad about their poker face, because as Garrot tells them what it felt like to be petrified, they once again feel sick to their stomach. They know exactly what Basilisks' petrifying does, hell, they even know what few of those things feel like, despite being immune to the actual petrifying power. And because they know what it does and know what few of those things feel, they're feeling like the worst person alive right now, they've never wanted to hurt Garrot, and now to him it seems like they tried to kill him. Why wouldn't he think that, with everything he knows about them.

However, the threat about wanting to break their neck? Normally, at this point, hearing the threat would mean that they're about to be dead, but there are no hands grabbing them, so they just look at the clone Garrot that had said that, right before Garrot Prime makes it disappear, and they turn to look at him instead. And he just confirms what his clone had said, and it doesn't feel like a punch in the gut, it feels deserved. At this point? Hell, they'd let him do that. They feel like they deserve it.

But suddenly, all the aggression is gone, but despite that, Garrot clasping his hands together with a loud clap makes their tail twitch, and it's the only sign he'll get of how wound up they still are. They don't know what's going to happen now, being yelled at was something easier to predict, but right now they have no idea what Garrot has in mind.

Which, turns out to be that he's still going to go through with this dinner? Because he's telling them to go take all the dinner things to the living room table, and to catch their breath while he goes to meditate. What? They had thought he wouldn't want him in his house anymore after what they did, what's going on?

They don't get to ask questions though, because Garrot is stomping upstairs, but the reassurance about them always being safe in his home fall flat, especially with how he says that if he wanted to kill them, they'd be dead already. Still, they don't feel safe. They had started to get there, but they went and ruined it themselves with what they did. Part of them just wants to leave, but the rest of them doesn't want to know what the conseqeuences to that would be.

So, they finally exhale, not having even realised they were holding their breath, and get started on moving everything over to the table in the living room. They're glad their hands aren't too shaky from that, the adrenaline spike wasn't big enough to really make them shaky, good. They don't know how long Garrot needs to take to calm down, and since they're just pushing their discomfort and all their other emotions to the side, they're just.. left waiting in the living room, fixing minor details with everything that they've set on the table to give themselves something to distract themselves with.

Eventually, they give Garrot that shout, to tell him that everything's ready, and they're relieved their voice doesn't shake, meaning they can get through this dinner without falling apart. Hopefully.

It isn't until Garrot sits down on the floor of his room that he realizes his fists were so tight that his claws were starting to draw blood. He's glad he retreated to somewhere farther away, because the look on Zafika's face would only make him feel worse. But he needs to calm down before he deals with any of this, so he takes one deep breath, then another, and closes his eyes. His monastic verses of choice come to mind, he remembers the sounds of the waves lapping against the shore and the birds chirping in the trees, and the chimes. Soon he's centering his thoughts on the serenity of the world and the fluidity of the self, and his breathing gets deeper, gets calmer. So when he hears Zafika's call minutes later, his eyes are slow to open. "Alright, I'll be down in a minute," he shouts back- Garrot doesn't meditate as much as he used to and it shows.

But he takes a few more breaths before returning to his feet and moving a little box from his closet to his jacket pocket. Circumstances were supposed to be better, but desperate times call for overt measures. Then he goes over the events with a clearer mind. Zafika was startled and reacted poorly and apologized. Being half-petrified was a new and horrible experience, so Garrot reacted poorly and didn't apologize at all. He got angry, he was threatening and not in some blowhard, chest-puffing kind of way. That table is broken and they're on opposite ends of a house instead of hanging out, eating dinner, and being friends.

Garrot starts to walk down the stairs, still breathing deep as he remembers what the monks told him when he first arrived, broken and terrified. This moment only defines them if they let their perceptions of their world remain attached to it. They just need reasons to let it fade into the past. So his footfalls take him to the couch, and he sits at the end farthest from Zafika. He's more relaxed than before, and he's facing them, looking at them, and his arms and legs are as open as the tone in his voice.

"I'm sorry, Zafika. About everything that happened. I was trying so hard to give you a normal dinner and a fun night that I forgot how to treat you." He sighs, trying not to keep himself from getting too visibly bummed out. "I wasn't actually mad about the eyes," especially since it was a relatable accident, "I was terrified because my body thought it was petrified and I freaked out and took it out on you." He closes his eyes for a moment, and then there's a little sniffle. None of this is going how Garrot wanted it to, and he hates it!

"I, uh... I actually had a gift for you that'd help, if you still want it." But then there's a sharp inhale. "I should've given it to you as soon as you got here, I'm really sorry!" And then he starts fishing around in his pocket for that box. Garrot can always put it back if they don't trust him.

Zafika looks towards the stairs when they hear Garrot shout in turn, but he, doesn't come down immediately? Okay he said he'd be down in a minute but usually people mean that they're heading down that exact moment. It doesn't ease their mind at all, they almost start pacing because Garrot is taking his time staying upstairs.

When they finally hear him come down, they're both relieved, and increasibly more nervous and unsure about what's going to happen now. So, they watch what he does, and as he sits down on the couch, they move to sit on the opposite end. And honestly, they could still disappear into the couch, even moreso now when they're, almost seeming smaller? Body language does things like that, even when they try to have an iron grip control on their body language.

Their poker face betrays them though when Garrot apologises, because they didn't expect that. Not because Garrot isn't the type to apologise, but because they feel like he doesn't have to do that, they're the one who were in the wrong with this. So, they end up looking little surprised. "No, no you had every right to freak out and be angry... that was completely unacceptable for me to do." Except then Garrot sniffles, and they freeze, because oh no is he going to cry!? Please don't cry they don't know what to do about people crying!

The mention about a gift just, further gives them a whiplash, but also feels like a punch in the gut. He had clearly planned them to relax and have a fun evening and they fucked that over. "I, don't really know if I deserve that anymore...? I didn't expect to even get anything in the first place?" But they're not freaking out about that hand in his pocket, so that's a good sign.

[personal profile] daddykong 2019-04-20 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Garrot knows that if he pushes the situation too hard, it'll break. He knew before, but it was at the back of his mind, ignored in favor of friendship and a grandiose preconception of how this night was going to go. So he sees Zafika's subtle retreat, he hears them say they don't deserve a gift, and he just exhales softly through his nose. He's not going to sigh, not at all that.

"I have four wonderful, flawed children. I know what an accident looks like." One hell of an accident, but he doesn't sound angry about it. Instead, he's calm. Accepting. It's not like they can go back in time. "Nobody's ever going to know this happened. Besides, people have gotten me gifts even after I've done stupid things, so why are you any different?" You're not, Zafika. Besides, Garrot decides if you deserve this gift, that's why he's giving it.

"But if you're not comfortable thinking of it as a gift," Garrot pulls the box from his pocket, opening it slightly and holding something from it in one hand, "consider it the doctor's orders." Of course, he's got a knowing, smug little smile that's every bit as warm as he's trying to be. Garrot reaches over halfway across the couch with one hand, gently holding holding the box so its untouched by his claws. "Take it. Please."

Zafika watches Garrot carefully, now once again in the mode of trying to read his expressions, meaning they get to watch his expression as he exhales softly through his nose. And they feel like if he wasn't, apparently trying to fix this, that would have been a sigh.

Then he brings up his children, and they're mentally reeling, because of course Garrot is a father, and this means that he has people waiting for him at home in Koskenkorva. They still end up averting their eyes, because their accident could have been lethal, so having Garrot be so calm and accepting about it now, after that outburst, it manages to make them feel even more guilty. But he's right, nobody's ever going to know this happened. They don't want to cause discourse between the Knights, so they'll take this to the grave, with all the emotions they're suppressing still. It's not healthy, but that's not important. They've made it this far suppressing and bottling everything up, they can get through this death game too.

They look up at Garrot when he mentions them possibly being uncomfortable with the idea of this being a gift, and oh look, there's the tiniest smile tugging at the corner of their mouth at Garrot and their now-routine 'doctor's orders' bit. They look at the slightly opened the box, before they exhale and at least reach over to open the box properly.

And actually physicall reel back when they see the contents of it, because what the fuck!? Are those? Yes! Yes they are! "Garrot...! I, wh- what the hell those are expensive where, how-" Congratulations Garrot, you have rendered the assassin speechless. They very, very carefully pick up the glasses, rotating them in their hands and holding them like they'll break any second. Because there are one of the few things that can block the Basilisks' petrification ability, and they are very, very expensive. They've never had them, of course, because of that, besides, as a kid and teen they never really, believed? That these would work?

Garrot just gets this smug little grin as the assassin is completely and utterly bamboozled. He scoffs, going so far as to roll his eyes, loosing his tranquility's grip on his expression just enough to have some fun with this.

"The how is easy." He sounds confident, like he's making a business pitch. "That button that's flush next to the right hinge turns on a little magitek battery that sends a weak electric current through the frames. It causes a reaction with a chemical in the lens coatings that scrambles and disconnects the petrifying part of a Basilisk's gaze, but not their eyes. So you could put them on, turn on the blocker," he pushes a button on the little remote in his hand, and the button is pressed automatically, which causes the glasses to faintly hum, "and we could have a staring contest. Right now. And they're waterproof, so you don't need to worry about rain or the ocean or monster blood shutting them down."

But then Garrot chuckles and lets out a mirthful sigh, knowing full well that being cagey and indirect doesn't help either of them right now, even though he's better than the instruction manual. But he still sounds a little smug because he realizes Zafika hasn't done their research, and doesn't know who he really is. They're speechless, so he might as well keep going and get it over with.

"You can keep calling me Garrot, but my full name is Hruggarrot Murtakhor." He knows the name alone shouldn't ring bells for an assassin who's been in a cage for years. Or for most people outside industry or high society. "I'm the heir to the Murtakhor estate, and I'm the Director of Research and Development for the family business, MurtaCorp. Yes, that MurtaCorp." Garrot smiles, always tickled by the cheesy play on words his parents came up with. Even with as much of a recluse as Zafika is, they'd know MurtaCorp as that globe-spanning corporation that ran remote clinics, hospitals, and carried out cutting edge research.

"And I got the most brilliant person I've ever met to build these by hand for you." Then he just reclines a bit in his corner of the couch, the smugness fading away to a nice serene smile as he lets all that sink in. It's not like he has anything to prove here, at least not about himself. Garrot knows how awesome and powerful and important he is, but none of that matters if he doesn't leverage it to help people. "He's going to be crushed if you don't try those on."

Zafika glances up at Garrot when they hear him scoff, but for most of his explanation on how the glasses work, they're inspecting them closely. Hearing the 'how' behind on them makes them, less doubtful about if they'll actually work or not, but after the petrifying incident, they're not very eager to try them out.

So it's probably understandable how their tail curls up tightly around them when Garrot suggests a staring contest, and they're naturally even visibly hesitant about the idea. Yesterday, trying out wether Gyre would be immune to their paralysing power had been stressful, but after they petrified Garrot's clone? The idea of having a staring contest with him to try out the glasses seems even worse. They can hear and feel the humming in the glasses, but they don't want to take the risk.

They spend the silence that follows Garrot's explanation worrying, meaning they don't get to say anything before he's speaking again. And only when he gives them his full name do they realise that, they actually never knew who exactly Garrot is. They had figured out he's someone important, with the way he talks and carries himself, and thanks to his habit of wearing suits. But to hear that he's the Director of Research and Development for MurtaCorp? They're shocked, and even more speechless.

They know exactly what MurtaCorp is, they've done research on it, and the company has their respect. It's one of the few that has nothing shady going on, it's an honest company that provides the best medical care one can get. Even in the middle of fuck-nowhere. Or, in as many places in the middle of fuck-nowhere as they can.

It's a lot to take in. Who Garrot really is, the fact that he's so easily giving them something like this, and the fact that he had someone make these glasses specifically for them. They let the silence stretch for longer as they process everyhting, looking at Garrot few times but, mostly they stare at the glasses they're still holding like the most precious, fragile crystal ever. They have a hard time believing that any of this is really happening, but it is.

"Thank you." They don't know how else to put everything they're feeling right now into words. They're extremely grateful, even though they feel like they still don't deserve this, and there's a whirlwind of emotions just, swirling inside them, but those two words are as genuine as can be. Even after what they did to him -what they've done before this- Garrot still wants to help them.

Garrot just watches the emotions unfold, a calm little smile on his face. He only got two words, but they're nice words. Genuine. This was absolutely the right choice.

"Zafika, if you were really thankful..." The tone in his voice has shifted to something more... expectant. Garrot's smile starts to widen, like a Cheshire Cat. "You'd actually put them on!" He's pivoted back into being eager as the zen starts to fade- he's really excited for this.

"We gotta see good you look!" And if they fit, let's not forget. "If you're worried, I mean-" He clicks a button on the remote, and the humming increases ever so slightly. "I just locked it so the blocker is on all the time." And then he just smiles, eagerly awaiting a response.

Put them on. Put them on. Put them on!!

Despite the shift in Garrot's voice, they worry for a bit when he speaks again, but oh, right, of course he wants them to actually put the glasses on. They're hesitant to test if they work, but putting them on isn't a stressful thing. So, they put the glasses on, and, okay, this feels a little weird.

They've never had a reason to wear glasses before, and these are something too expensive anyway, so it's odd to have anything else but their blindfold on their face. They even swear they can feel the humming of the glasses too, but they figure they'll be able to ignore it soon. As well as, how everything is now coloured differently, thanks to the dark gray colour of the glasses. That's going to fuck them over for a while.

"Okay, well, this is, something. They fit almost perfectly, and you know what? I'm not going to ask how they fit so well... though getting used to them will take a while." They decide to look around the house a little and oh, oh yeah having a grey screen over everything is so disorienting, especially since they still see bits that are normal. Mostly right beneath the glasses, but still.

Garrot leans in a foot or two, staring a Zafika's face as they look around the room. He has a little smirk from how well they fit, but he says nothing about it. He's clearly having fun, and it's like their little accident never happened... except for the couch length of distance between them.

"It took me a while to get used to my glasses. But I think they look great on you!" He nods, wishing he could snatch Zafika up in a hug or give them a high five or something. The damn couch should be shorter! "But do... do you like them? They're made of some real tough stuff, so you can even wear them in a fight! If- if you want." Sure, it's a good and exciting gift, but with that out of the way Garrot's getting antsy about the reflexive-attack elephant in the room.

Zafika looks at Garrot quickly, nodding at his words a bit. They, do sort of, ignore the compliment, they're bad with reacting to those. However, they note how he's leaning closer to them, despite still remaining in his end of the couch. It's bit odd how easily he seems to be acting like the accident never happened.

"I like them. I really do, you don't have to worry about that.. and, I'm very grateful that you actually... went out of your way and had someone make these for you... thank you. Please tell your friend that I'm grateful for these as well." It'll take them a moment to get used to the fact that... they can now look at people without having to be so careful, but the idea that they'll be able to do that? It makes them happy, and relieved.

"G-good! I'm glad you like them!" He sounds relieved, since it would sure be a pain if Sly went to all this trouble for a flop. Plus, they might have had a bet about how this would all go...

"Plus, you know what this means?" Garrot finds himself leaning back into his corner of the couch, with a bit of a cheeky smile on his face. "Next time someone surprises you, there's only one accident instead of two." Yep, he's talking about freaking out and petrifying someone. But then he gets a confused look on his face, because...

"I mean, unless you just make someone piss themselves instead." Considering he sounds proud when he says that, Garrot's making some kind of joke or trying to lighten the mood. He knows this isn't an easy thing to talk about, after all.
