Day 3: Morning
Morning: 6:00am - 12:00noon
[ IRL Timeframe: April 22nd -It's the third day and, in striking comparison to day two, it is not a bright and sunny morning. The day begins for every hero with an unfamiliar room in an unfamiliar place in an unfamiliar time.
When your characters check their phones, clocks, calendars, or any other timekeeping implement they'll find that the year is 00 AW, forty years before the present day. The year before the Wizard's first game was held, the year before it came down to only two knights and the Princess facing off against the Wizard. It was before all of it.
Everywhere your characters go, there are no people. Their devices will not connect to the internet outside of the island, their companions will not appear, the Protector will not answer, but they can text each other without difficulty. If groups in the same city try to find each other, they will find that some kind of mystical plot barrier is keeping them from finding each other. A wrong turn, a locked door, a lost connection. Somehow, they're kept apart. All the support they have is who they woke up with. Oddly, everyone wakes up in their normal day-to-day clothing rather than pajamas.
There have to be answers somewhere, but where?
The Weather
- Eerily still.
- 64°F / 18°C
- The trees are unmoving, there is no wind.
Prompts:
- 6:30am Spa Hotel, Bamborough: Two sets of heroes wake up in the Spa Hotel in Bamborough. Garrot wakes up in the same room as Olivia. On the far side of the Spa hotel, in one of the waterfront cabins, Haizea and Joanna wake up in the same room. The hotel is empty, but every room is unlocked. Food's still in the dining areas, too. Oddly, things look like they were in use around the Hotel. Carts in the middle of hallways, half-eaten meals on tables, bags halfway up staircases. Odd.
- 6:30am Lodge Cots, Craydon: The Craydon lodge isn't much, but it's a spanning complex of cabins that maximize occupancy by filling them with cots for that "outdoor camping" experience. Rory and Gail will wake up in one of the cabins near the base of the mountain. On the furthest edge of the lodge, Gyre and Seth will wake up in their top-level cots higher up the mountain. There are a few campfires going with meat roasting over them, piles of raw meat to the side ready to cook, and various festivities left laying around. It's almost like everyone up and left all at once, but where did they go?
- 6:30am Cozy Inn, Far Haven: Far Haven's 'Cozy Inn' promises the 'small town feeling' in the middle of the big city. The inside is exactly that, a very cozy little hotel with three floors of rooms and a covered walkway with a glass floor over a garden into another section of the hotel. Zafika and Web will wake up in a room on the first floor nearest the train station exit of the cozy inn. No doors are locked here and it looks as if things were left strewn about like the people just teleported out of here. Terrence, Matilda, and Luka wake up in the glass walkway above, in sleeping bags. They'll find that the only way out goes to the cozy inn's far building, they'll have to go through a spanning cafeteria space with tons of empty tables that, strangely, look like they were just in use. Plates with half-full, or even untouched plates sit around on every table and there are even jackets draped over some chairs, purses on the ground. The city outside is much the same, vehicles just stopped in the middle of the street with no drivers, things dropped on the ground. What happened...?
- 9:30am, Exploration, Bamborough, Craydon, Far Haven: The scene is much the same in all three cities. When the heroes make their way outside, they'll notice that the sky above Harsen Island is a massive vortex centered over the mountain in the middle of the island. Heroes in Craydon will get to see it a little closer, the massive clouds occasionally crackling with blue lightning. All three cities have glowing cracks in the ground in various places, the cracks lead all around, some larger, some smaller, maybe there's something to be found? There are large glowing obelisks that are floating over each city and outside of them, they occasionally float down near the ground enough to touch or look closer at. Once the heroes make their way out into the streets, they might start seeing glimpses of a Wizard hat in the distance but each time it passes behind a wall or into shadow and is gone. Maybe they can catch up? Maybe your hero takes a moment to search through local news, the paper, letters, a television station. What's going on in the city right now?

"You should be careful out here, something exciting is going on!" They copy him almost word for word, clarifying on the mistake he'd made.
Ahead of him, Luka's closing in on a sheer rock wall. The voice seems to be coming from straight ahead but the wind now feels like it's rushing around the area, rushing around Luka. So there's an alarming calm that finally settles in. If he walks up towards the rock wall, he'll find that there's a section in the middle that feels different, a big covered archway that's just a smooth, solid piece of rock that stands in striking contrast to the rough rock wall all around it.
no subject
When he reaches it, he feels it's surface, attempting to figure out what exactly it is. A door, perhaps? He thinks, noting the difference in texture.
"What's going on, exactly?" He asks to the voice again.
no subject
To his left, he'll hear the soft sounds of someone trailing their nails along the rock face. It's a strange, gentle scraping that's approaching slowly, casually. There's a familiar feeling from the new arrival: The same as the Wizard. But the body is wrong. It isn't the usual small, petite form of the current year's Wizard. There's muscle and height and, of course, the good butt. While the defining feature, the hat, is present... the pajamas are absent. Instead they're wearing black robes decorated with deep purple clouds and blue stars. They're wearing what can only be compared to a plague doctor's mask. Not a single inch of skin is showing and their eyes are hidden behind tinted glass. Instead of a long beak on the front of their mask, the mouth section is a maw of sharp teeth that, even parted, shows nothing behind it.
They exhale as they arrive, their breath forming a fog in the air in front of them. It hasn't gotten cold, but there's a sudden stillness all around them. What now, Luka? The voice didn't answer, and now there's this. He can keep hunting around with the smooth rock face, if it's a door is there a handle? Or will the new arrival distract him from the door?
no subject
Luka turns in the direction of the scraping sound. He's trying not to panic, imagining all the many things that could be its source. He wants to believe that perhaps it's just the child he'd heard earlier playing games with him, but deep down he knows that presence is not that of a child. It's far too imposing.
"Hey," Luka says, hiding his unease from his voice. He takes a defensive step back, but keeps one hand on the stone wall. If it was a door, maybe it could be his escape. "Who are you? What's going on?"
no subject
They don't answer his words, though, remaining silent in front of him. But now when they exhale, the fog of their breath rolls past Luka and it's very clear that it's cold. It's not the area around them that's causing it, it's their breath.
What next, Princess?
no subject
"Sweetie, I wouldn't be where I am if I just signed any contract without reading the fine print. Or any of the print at all. I don't even know what you're offering me." His words are bold, but one hand is still feeling the smooth stone of the wall for any kind of way through.
The stranger's cold breath against his skin only quickens the pace of his searching and the desperation Luka feels for some way out of the encounter. He tries knocking on the door --- maybe someone was inside? Anything was worth a shot.
no subject
Luka's efforts on the door pay off, though, because he'll find a section that's textured oddly. From any outside observer, the set of buttons are practically invisible to the naked eye. It's only on closer inspection that the 3 by 4 grid of buttons with engraved numbers becomes obvious. It's only clear to Luka what he's found because he has his fingers on it. The buttons are nearly flush with the smooth stone, seemingly a part of whatever this is.
Wack.
no subject
He continues attempting passcode combinations with one hand, hoping the... Wizard? doesn't find it offensive or grounds for some kind of retaliation.
"Well, are you going to explain yourself?" Luka asks.
no subject
Luka you've seriously got them confused with someone else don't you? The Wizard would never just tell someone things would they?
Yet even so, the Wizard is still standing there with their hand out, offered to Luka. They aren't making any indication that they've even acknowledged his request. They know he's punching in numbers, they know he won't get the combination, there's a specific combination that's exactly thirteen numbers long and the probability of him getting that 1 in 130 trillion solution was uh, pretty low.
But any chance of that gets interrupted by the child whispering in Luka's ear again. The voice comes curious, far too close for a strange child to be considering what Luka was face to face with.
"Are they your friend?"
no subject
"I don't know them, and they're being VERY RUDE, if I may say." Luka says between clenched teeth.
He feels like a cornered animal and all his instincts are telling him to just run, now. And he would, if the ground weren't laden with electrified cracks.
"Hey, kid, do you know a way out of here, by any chance?" he finally asks.
no subject
Or leave.
"Just walk down the mountain!" The child answers immediately to Luka's question, somehow being even more unhelpful here. That's the way out, just walk down to the ocean. The ocean was out. Easy!
Looks like Luka's stuck between a Wizard and a hard place.
no subject
"I'm not on the mountain. I can't do that. Do you know anything about how to get through this door?" he taps one hand against the stone wall for emphasis.
Luka's still painfully aware of the Wizard just standing there with their hand extended, but there was no way he'd take their hand without even the slightest hint of their intentions. If the kid couldn't help now, his next plan was to just walk away.
no subject
But then the child is just laughing, fading away into the distant wind again to leave Luka alone. Looks like Luka's options are dwindling, but at least he learned something about the door?
Maybe?
no subject
The Wizard thus far has been even less helpful than the child, and Luka isn't particularly interested in accepting any mystery deals. He didn't imagine the Wizard was going to just open the door for him either.
So he decides to run.
He carefully steps back, tracing a path around the web of cracks in the earth beneath him. With every footfall he's overcome with relief that he miraculously managed to avoid stepping into a crack. When he's gotten a good distance between himself and the Wizard, he stops to lean against an abandoned building to catch his breath and reassess the situation.
"What the FUCK?" he shouts.
no subject
Later as in, say, 40 years?
The wind is at Luka's back the whole way, electricity rippling through him and around him as if it can make him go back. It can't, it can't even change direction, it's just with him. When he comes to a stop and shouts, the wind stops dead and he's left in silence.
Alone.
