Day 3: Monster Arrival

Morning-Afternoon: 11:00am - Evening

[ IRL Timeframe: May 8th - May 22nd May 29th, 2019 ]

It's monster time.

Wherever your hero is when 11am rolls around, they're in for a change. At 11am on the dot everyone will start growing more and more transparent until, at 11:15am, they pass out momentarily. When they wake, they'll find that they aren't where they were before. More importantly, they'll find that the world is not as they left it. When they look around, or on their phones, they'll see that the date is 01 AW and the specific day is one day after the Wizard was defeated, the first time, by the first set of knights. The newspapers all around the city reflect a dramatic change in the world, though several characters may remember the change if they were alive for it.

While the island is still devoid of its inhabitants, the characters will find that they are now able to locate each other. They can text freely, they can team up, but even if they do they'll feel an inexplicable pull towards those they woke up with. More importantly, they'll each feel a pull towards another presence.

All six teams of heroes will feel a presence following them, an unmistakably menacing feeling that, if they stay still, gets closer and closer with each passing moment.

Third Morning Event: All Cities: The Past.

The Weather

  • Alive, but with what?
  • 64°F / 18°C
  • There is only wind, the air crackles with electricity.

Prompts:

  • 11:00am Bamborough: The heroes have been shaken up, at 11am on the dot everyone will start growing more and more transparent until, at 11:15am, they pass out momentarily. When they wake, they'll find that they aren't where they were before. Haizea and Olivia will wake on the edge of the fountain in Bamborough's resort hotel lobby. If they're unlucky, a hand, a foot, or their entire body may end up tumbling into the water of the fountain. Down by the water, Joanna and Web will wake up on their backs in the sand with the ocean water lapping at their feet and legs. If they stay laying there for too long, they'll end up underwater. How did Web make it from Far Haven to Bamborough this quickly?

  • 11:00am Craydon: The heroes have been shaken up, at 11am on the dot everyone will start growing more and more transparent until, at 11:15am, they pass out momentarily. When they wake, they'll find that they aren't where they were before. Gail and Seth wake up in hanging hammocks in one of Craydon's fancier cabins, with a small assortment of fruits, veggies, and little bite-sized sandwiches laid out on a platter in the middle of the cabin. How anyone got Gail into a hammock is anyone's guess, but somehow he's going to have to make it down. Fortunately there's a little ladder on the wall, maybe that will help? Gyre, Rory, and Luka, meanwhile, wake up on the floor of the cog train as it's making the last leg of its trip up into Craydon's central train station. If they stay laying on the floor for too long, the train will take them all the way back to the base of the mountain. How did Luka make it from Far Haven to Craydon this quickly?

  • 11:00am Far Haven: The heroes have been shaken up, at 11am on the dot everyone will start growing more and more transparent until, at 11:15am, they pass out momentarily. When they wake, they'll find that they aren't where they were before. Zafika and Matilda wake up in the elevator of one of the tallest buildings in town. The soft 'ding' of the elevator stopping at every single floor on its way down to the lobby is a gentle wake-up call for them both. The elevator is set to stop at every floor all the way down, and it's at about floor 15 when they start waking up. If they wait too long, it'll go all the way back up to floor 56. Terrence and Garrot, meanwhile, wake up on the roof of the local theatre. The sounds of still-airing movies are audible beneath them and the constant thrum of the air systems around them will bring them back to consciousness pretty quickly. Not to mention the unrelenting wind blowing from the storm. How did Garrot make it from Bamborough to Far Haven this quickly?

  • 12:00noon, The Monster [Phase 1], Bamborough, Craydon, Far Haven: The third monster is here? If your characters stay put, they'll feel a menacing presence getting closer and closer but they won't see anything. If they stay long enough, something invisible will start shoving them. A shove here, a push there, the attacks will come from multiple directions and will persist until your character falls over. Whatever's happening, something's here and it's insistent. How are the heroes supposed to fight something they can't see?

  • 1:00pm, The Monster [Phase 2]: For most of the heroes, the hour between noon and 1pm is spent being filled with more questions and no answers. Why were there invisible monsters shoving them around? Any heroes that tried to attack them just swished through empty air. Why couldn't they be hurt?

There isn't an answer to that question, because the real third monster arrives just in time to distract the heroes. At 1pm on the dot, every hero's monster pull will aggressively alert them to an approaching presence. In the same way that someone hears a plane approaching from the engines, it's a feeling that practically advertises the arrival of something horrible.

All six groups of heroes will be treated to a monster that is easily the stuff of nightmares. Imagine a child with yellow skin, but no face, no hair, no details of any kind. Except for eyes, three eyes (two humanoid, one forehead) this time. Just very clearly the shape of a child. The legs are entirely humanoid, but the arm is a mass of arms, all in varying lengths and with such weight that the body is leaned over and using that arm mass as another leg.

Also every child is split in half from the head down, meaning each half-child has one leg, a half body, half neck, half head, one and a half eyes, and a mass of arms. The teams of Haizea, Olivia, Gail, Seth, Zafika, and Matilda will all be treated to the left-half children. The teams of Joanna, Web, Gyre, Rory, Luka, Terrence, and Garrot will be treated to the right-half children.

These monsters will arrive slowly lumbering down the street, one and a half eyes scanning around them as they approach. The air around the monsters steams as if the ground were on fire, the monsters' image rippling in the rapidly rising air.

The Princess will discover that he has an advantage in this scenario. He can feel that there's something more to this, that there's something in the ground that he can control. If he tries to focus on it, he'll find that he can set the ground ablaze simply by focusing on it. The range isn't overly far, though, no more than thirty feet. He'll have to plan carefully if he wants to heat things up!

  • ?:00pm, The Monster [Phase 3]: Unknown. Will be revealed if triggered or no later than May 22nd.

What... The hell is it doing..? Is it eating the foam..? Is that bad?! Can it recover from that?! Terrence isn't really in much of a mind to ponder most of this, but the disgusting slurping sound coming from the creature causes a visceral enough reaction in him to stop the spraying.

Oh fuck, it just grabbed onto Garrot's weapon, and Terrence doesn't have his own back yet! It seems distracted enough for the moment, though, and it's still both really slow and already holding on, so he should be okay, but... Now, what..? Man, it has a lot of hands, but... If it's going to keep trying to hold on, then maybe they can stop it from doing that at least?

"Sucecq, get ready to convert the shield to a claymore! Or... A zweihander! Something long," the rabbit knight stammers, circling around the creature towards the two doctors while maintaining a safe distance. He's clearly flustered, but at least he's analyzing the situation. Terrence doesn't know his medieval weaponry all that well, but he trusts that the other knight can handle a big fuck-off hunk of sharpened metal even before a buff.

"Garrot, I'm going to strengthen your doppelganger! Or... Yourself? Whichever one is wielding the sword! Perhaps if you keep the blade perpetually moving, you can slice through it even as it tries to grab hold!"

After strafing around the creature over to Garrot Classic, Terrence holds out both hands - one to touch the shield in GC's hand and the other to rest against his arm, doing both the converting and buffing at the same time. It's only been three days, but even with the knights losing their powers earlier in the day it's practically second-nature to him already.

When Garrot first landed on the island, he took the time to eat a local delicacy- a terrifying jello mold. Look before you yolo and all that! But this was different, because it was a murderous monster that just got all grabby at his spear and started eating the fire extinguisher foam! It got stabbed in the head, and it does not care, it would probably keep eating that stuff, which is freakish even by Garrot's standards!

"What the fuck?!" is about all Garrot Prime can hiss out before he starts wrestling for control over the spear. But there's six gross arms getting their rot-stank'd selves all over his shaft, and even with as strong as he is, he can't really beat that and the heat. So instead, Garrot Prime starts to wiggle the spear, slowly backing up while trying to slice up the beast more as it approaches.

"What the fuck?!" is only the first thing that Garrot Classic says, pretty much in time with Prime. It was kind of an overwhelming thought that wasn't worth self-censoring. But it's not until Terrence slips into the fray and converts that shield into a fuck-nasty hero-sword that Garrot Classic snaps out of his concerned and baffled reverie. The pieces fall into place as he realizes he can switch from defense to one hell of an offense!

"Thanks for the speedy delivery!" He glances towards Terrence and just nods, a shit-eating grin on his face. "I'll got some strong ideas in mind for such a big package." Someone stop him. From speaking, not from doing anything else. See, Garrot Classic knows he's got that strength booster, and he knows how strong he is naturally and how insane this monster buster blade is. So he lifts it with more ease than he thought possible and slams it down with all the force he can muster right into the meat(?) space where all those arms connect to the shoulder(?). It can't pull away a weapon if it doesn't have working arms!

[ Garrot Prime starts jiggling the spear to cut up the monster a bit while trying to back away. Garrot Classic uses a strength-boosted greatsword to try and guillotine-drop the monster's many arms off and loosen that grip. ]

Geez, it grabbed that, too? Terrence had been banking on the sharp edges and constant motion of the blade to let them continue cutting through it even as it tried to grasp for purchase... On top of that, he's still personally unarmed, and the extinguisher was a bust! So now what?! The high stakes of the current situation are distracting enough that he can't even manage a witty retort to Garrot's innuendo.

The rabbit knight helped out in the former two fights thus far, but he hadn't been particularly proactive (despite charging ahead both times). He wants to help more! Worst-case scenario, yesterday's discovery of Terrence's healing potential means that as long as they ultimately win, then after the fact he can fix up Garrot (probably).

Or... Does damage transfer between the clones..? Probably something he should've asked before, but there's not exactly the time for civilized discourse at the moment! Staying behind Garrot Classic to form a sort of meaty barrier between himself and the heat, Terrence wraps his arms around the larger man's waist from behind. As close to 'around' as possible, at any rate, since his arms don't reach quite that far.

"I'm going to double-up, try to pull loose!" Terrence yells around the doctorganger's back. It's not actually double the previous boost, but the rabbit pushes his power further than he's actually tested thus far. Garrot will indeed feel his muscles flood with yet more vigor than they did even a moment ago. The sensation still isn't painful, and there's no immediately apparent physical change, but compared to the previous buff, this one could be a bit uncomfortable. Unnerving, even. Pushing it like this is additionally a bit worrisome since it isn't yet clear what drawback is balancing out the boost... And whatever it is will increase proportionately as well.

As Terrence needs only to touch his target in general, it leaves him free to help pull Garrot away from the monster as well. He has a good grip in this sort of reverse bugbearhug, after all. Any force the noodley CEO can possibly generate would be a drop in the bucket compared to Garrot's - even without any enhancement. Still, it's the thought that counts as they say. Surprising even himself, he's determined to do his best, dammit!

See, in normal circumstances, Garrot would've just make a snarky little joke about how Terrence wrapped his arms around him and it's been a while since he's been the little spoon. But, uh, there's a steam-spewing handsy monster right there and it's got a real good grip on that sword of theirs.

"Fuck no, it's right where I want it!" The words are surprisingly harsh as the enhanced boost starts to settle in. Garrot Classic just squares his stance up as he squats a little, including giving Terrence a bit of a BugBear Butt Bump, mostly for laughs. But then, in the middle of that motion, Garrot Prime half-steps towards the pair. It's hard to lean in conspiratorially when an arm-monster is vaguely pulling you closer via a spear, but Garrot Prime sure tries.

"We just don't want to hurt you in case he slips after pulling the sword out!" And then he goes back to slicing up the monster's arms with more of the same swiveling, spiraling motions with that spear. Garrot Prime is getting closer to the hotbox, and so he's definitely starting to turn red and sweat a bit. Garrot Classic, however, turns red because his motivations just got revealed! How embarrassing!!!

And so Garrot Prime's demeanor shifts to rage and his hands clamp around the greatsword's grip. He starts rapidly pistoning the sword up and down like, uh... like scissors. There's a lot of blade there, and a lot of hands on that blade, so he's looking to keep that damage going.

[ Garrot Prime is losing the tug-of-war against the monster, but he's still jiggling that spear as much as he can. Garrot Classic is hunkering down and berserker-rage scissor-smiting those grabby arms with the greatsword and an even more ridiculous amount of strength. ]

What? No, this is absolutely appropriate! They're winning!

As Garrot enacts his own plans for how to take on the monster, the rabbit knight is just sort of flung around like a keychain hanging off the man's belt or something. When the creature's grip finally gives out, Terrence likewise loses his grip and finds himself on his backside in the middle of the road a few meters back. For most of this encounter, Terrence had been more distracted by the threat of the creature and the heat it was giving off than any smell, but it hits in full force now - the knight turns his head and visibly gags now that there's time to truly take in the fragrance.

He's a delicate man with delicate sensibilities.

Still, the strength of that smell makes it seem like they killed it..? Both Garrots look to be free, and the monster is... Well, not there anymore, really. Terrence exhales loudly while leaning back to lie flat on the street.

"...This undoubtedly wasn't the only one," he confers while digging in his jacket for a phone again. Victory is great, but he's still dedicated to being helpful! Everyone else might not be so lucky, so he fires off a text from the cold ground before raising his head to check on the twin doctors again.

It's disgusting, even by Garrot's "regularly poking around in the body" sensibilities, when the monster just dissolves. Normal people, even the aberrantly sick, don't just assume a liquid form like that! And then there's the smell, that nasty, eggy smell on top of the strawberries and fish and the heat and the adrenaline that's causing it all to truly hit both Garrots' noses as soon as they drop their sludge-covered weapons. They're the companions' problems now.

"Ugh..." The grunt is about all either one can manage until they both retch, placing their hands at their knees and doubling over to the point where they almost knock their skulls together! But their eyes are both shut tight, and they're groaning as if a dog just let a nasty fart out a few feet from them.

"I think this is worse than yesterday's? It's... definitely the strawberries. Why do the guts smell like eggs?!" Garrot Classic coughs and groans, and suddenly Garrot Prime dissipates into golden-bronze glitterdust. With a single, deep exhale, the doctor seems much better... even though he was complaining over Terrence's incredibly valid point and that text message has gone totally ignored for now. After all, his friend is laying on the ground!

"Are you okay?!" He's closed the distance to his potentially-injured buddy, clear worry in his voice as he squats down, eyes turning teal to check for structural damage. "Sorry, I should've been more careful, I just haven't gotten close to any of the monsters yet..." What a worrywart, Garrot and his jeggings...

"Fine, just taking a moment to collect myself... Mentally, if nothing else," he admits, not moving from his face-up position on the ground. While his words are a bit shaky, any analysis by Garrot's personal power will corroborate the rabbit knight's story - he's breathing heavily, nervous, and his muscles are a tad sore but he's completely unharmed and quickly calming down in his new prone position.

"Phew, you really showed it, hm?" Terrence laughs. In part he's trying to distract from the smell and disgusting situation, but, well... Part of him really wanted to show how useful he could be - not just as a 'buffbot' due to his powers, but with his own strength. And here yet again he'd mostly been in the way and needing protection. It was nice they could rely on Garrot, but personally it was... Frustrating.
