Day 4: Morning
Morning: 6:00am - 12:00noon
[ IRL Timeframe: July 3rd -If any hero was expecting day four to be anything but absolutely bananas, they'd been living in a dream bubble. Fortunately for everyone, they wake up where they fell asleep the previous night. Unfortunately, though, everyone receives a decidely rude awakening at 6:06am.
An earthquake.
No part of the island is safe, everywhere and everything starts shaking and rumbling. Roads split, the train tracks bend, buildings fracture, buildings collapse...
...and bright, glowing blue fissures open up in the ground.
No city is safe from their new feature, but in every single city it's clear that the cracks are coming from a specific source. In Far Haven, the cracks lead west to Craydon. In Bamborough, the cracks lead east to Craydon. In Craydon, though, the cracks lead directly north up the mountain. They gradually narrow the further up the mountain you go, where do they end?
Heroes will, of course, not be able to immediately see this pattern. How are they going to find out about it? Social Media won't be buzzing about it until noon at the earliest!
But that won't be the only thing social media is buzzing about by noon. It looks like Web is nowhere to be found. A concerned local
The Weather
- Eerily still.
- 64°F / 18°C
- Despite the quake, there's a nice breeze.
Prompts:
- 6:06am Earthquake, Everywhere: Every town has fallen victim to an earthquake. The damage is unthinkable. Cars aren't moving anymore, roads and paths are obstacle courses, and everything inside has fallen over. It was a big one! Fortunately the citizens are out almost immediately to begin rescue and repair efforts. No matter where the heroes go, there'll be someone to help, something to do, or help to be offered. Do you need saving, or will you be saving others?
- 7:45am Train Station, Far Haven: Social media is going absolutely crazy. There's a MONSTER here! There's a monster in the train station!! Numerous pictures are posted of a Child-shaped monster with ten eyes instead of a face. Today, however, he's wearing a pair of black athletic shorts, some flip-flops, and a T-Shirt that says "I'm with Stupid" on the front and an arrow that trails around to the back of the shirt where it says "You're Stupid". At the train tracks, he's going one rail tie at a time repairing them to get the tracks straightened and fixed again. What's the deal???
- 08:00am International Cabin of Crepes, Bamborough: As if Social Media wasn't buzzing enough about the monster in Far Haven, it explodes again when the Wizard arrives at ICoC for breakfast. Several servers post that she asked for "the family table" and she invited all the knights and the princess to join her. Breakfast. Her treat. Anyone who comes to visit will find her sitting at the head of the biggest table, sipping a mug of coffee.
- 11:00am Mountain Base, Craydon: [Exploration] Several hikers have returned from up the mountain, reporting that they'd found "strange doors" blocking their path. According to the description they gave, it sounds like the doors can only be opened if one, or more, of the heroes make the climb up the mountain. The cracks go up past the doors, but there's an invisible wall all around the area that stops them from ascending any further. Whatever's going on up the mountain will need some heroic intervention to figure out. Good luck, heroes!

Being scooped up to a bridal carry? Now that's definitely surprising, and maybe mildly embarrassing, but there's no backing away now. So they only hold onto Garrot lightly for support, since he seems to have a pretty firm grip on them and their tail is still around them. It's only two quick little hops and Garrot is back on the ground, and they expect to be placed down too once he has a solid footing.
Except not. Instead they're bit awkwardly pulled into a hug, and they blink for a bit in surprise before they properly register what Garrot is saying and... it makes them feel guilty, and that shuddering sigh breaks their heart the tiniest bit.
They didn't react immediately to being hugged, but better late than never. And, thank god, they're not rejecting it, and instead wrap their arms around Garrot's shoulders and squeeze, not needing to worry about being careful since their minimal strength most likely can't hurt him. But hey, this is great improvement compared to day one. "I'm sorry for worrying you... but I'm okay, I promise." Their voice is little muffled, since their face is partially buried against Garrot with how they're smooshed against him. But they don't honestly mind, not even that he's soaking wet.

"But seriously, I thought you blew up and died and I was covered in what was left." There's a slight whine at the emd of that remark, and Garrot still looks a little shaken. His life was pretty fucked up for a hot second. That said, a smirk creeps back on his face for a moment.
"So, uh, you're not allowed to make your doctor think you're dead ever again, got it?" Then there's a soft, forced little chuckle, even though that's hardly up to the two of them. Deflect emotions with humor!
no subject
"But I didn't die. Just, got teleported weirdly. And might be in the need of a moment, it's surprisingly disorienting, even compared to yesterday." They don't know why it's more disorienting, but it is. Then again, might have something to do with the fact that it wasn't directly the Wizard's doings this time, but instead because they stepped into one of those cracks.
Garrot's forced chuckle doesn't really convince them, but they decide to go along with the humour, at least for now, as they at least partially detach from Garrot so they can look up at him. "Well, as long as you won't make your patient ever think that you're dead, I think you've got a deal."
no subject
"But seriously, I hope you never have to see that happen to someone else." A beat passes, his shoulder slump a bit, and his free arm wipes some snot from his nose. "It was fucking terrifying."
And then his eyes glance back towards the trail they were trying to follow. They'll both have to be more careful.
no subject
But as they watch his confident demeanor -no matter how faked currently- fade, they raise their hand and place it on Garrot's wrist, giving it a gentle squeeze. "I'm sorry you had to see that.. but I'll be careful, I promise. You won't have to see that again." At least, he won't have to see them explore again. Well, only if Zafika has any say in the matter. So no testing out if the cracks are going to do just the same thing over and over or not, no matter how curious they are about it. Which is, very curious. But that'll have to just wait.
no subject
"What if something different happens when I touch it?" He chuckles at that idea, but shows no signs of budging from where he stands. "You're, uh... not supposed to start with humanoid testing." Big guy's making a medical joke, but it's clear he's just as curious.
"Wanna mess with 'em on the way down? I'm sure we can find an apple to toss in or something." And then there's that mischievous Garrot chuckle, as if to say he plans on doing so no matter what Zafika responds with.
no subject
And they don't even have to wonder what he's thinking, not for long at least before he speaks up again, and their entire self seems to perk up at the question as they turn to look at Garrot, look at the crack they stepped into, look at him again and without missing a beat, say, "Absolutely." This is the most excitement Garrot has seen from them so far, honestly, and yeah, cold blooded assassin is the last thing you'd call them, save for being literally cold blooded of course.
See, see, these two are a horrible combination, in the sense that they both have a sense of reckless curiosity and the want to test things out to see if they result in something else. Even after what happened to them with the crack Zafika stepped into. The Snake Knight is probably going to poke at few of the cracks again just to see if the same thing will happen to them or if something else will happen.
no subject
"We gotta climb the mountain so we can do science on the way down, you know." Garrot's a little cheeky with that remark, hoping to distract Zafika from the cracks long enough for them to make more progress... even though part of him wants to stop and test the cracks out now. "Are you still alright with leading the way, or should I?"
no subject
So, back to hiking the mountain they go, with some idle conversation here and there, but mostly it's silence, and this time it's not awkward, tense silence at all. But after a good moment of silence, Zafika decides to break that.
"Hey, Garrot... what was that question you wanted to ask from me again?" They only glance at him briefly from the corner of their eye, before they look forward again, keeping an eye on the ground. Day three left them with no time to dwell on the deflected question asking, and after a heart attack and some hugging, they're wondering about what he would have asked if the dinner hadn't become little disastrous. "I still owe you that one answer to any question you want to ask, and we have plenty of hiking left to do."
no subject
"Oh, that...!" His voice raises an octave or two with the emphasis, and Garrot lets out a surprisingly meek little chuckle. It's clear he hadn't forgotten about it, but he's been caught more than a bit off-guard. One hand reaches to scratch at the back of his neck anime-style, and his eyes start darting around like a teenager at a school dance.
"Y-you don't have to answer if you don't want to, but-" Garrot chuckles again, clearly incredibly nervous. He doesn't want to make things awkward again and for as smart as he is, he knows he tends to say the stupidest things sometimes. "I was just wondering, uh..." More fidgeting. Jeez, this guy.
"How you got into being an assassin to begin with?" And then he barks out a forced little laugh, as if that makes the conversation less weird by sheer force of his hesitation. "I mean, you seem like a nice enough ki- person that you would've ended up doing, like, anything else?" But then he catches himself and gives some light, halting hand gestures towards Zafika. "But you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to!"
Garrot, in a perfect depiction of minimal self-awareness, is making himself and his entire half of the conversation awkward by getting in his own head. He did just watch his little pal magically explode, so. Uh. He's decidedly not back to an emotional equilibrium quite yet.
no subject
They wait through his nervous chatting, and the fidgeting, and his question ends up being exactly the one they had so far been the most worried about. It's not exactly something they would have wanted to tell to... well, pretty much anyone, really.
They bite their lip while Garrot reassures them they don't want to answer his question, but. They really need to catch up on this whole trusting people business. And so far he's been pretty trustworthy. So after maybe a minute of silent thinking, they sigh and glance at him again before speaking. "It's... I don't, really want to answer that. Yet. And definitely not here. But... once we get down from this mountain, I can answer it properly. But it's definitely a young person's stupid, stupid decision, even if I can't say for sure I'd take it back." It's what has given them.. a sort of advantage, when it comes to knowing how to not die, and how to fight.
"For now you just, have to wait. I'll promise I'll tell you the reason once we're back down from here."
no subject
"You know I'm old, right?" He chuckles a bit, casually sliding up next to Zafika. "That means every stupid decision I've made is, well, a younger person's stupid decision." This is Garrot, trying to relate. Emboldened by the fact that he'll get an answer to the question, he doesn't really second-guess himself anymore. "And I've done a lot of dumb shit, I promise." Then he just sort of... cracks... his neck a bit. Gross!
"I'll tell you a couple stories later, if it'll make you comfortable?" Now that Garrot's got a warm little smile on his face, it's almost as if this were just a normal day. Even if part of that smile is him picking out the weirdest stories to tell.
no subject
"I'd say becoming an assassin is... one of the most stupid decisions, at least, but you know what? Sure. Hearing some embarrassing stories could be fun." Especially if they're embarrassing stories about Garrot himself, because somehow they have a feeling that the said embarrassing stories will be so much. "So, once we're down from this mountain and we can have privacy, I'll answer your question and you'll get to share some stories. Does that sound good?"
no subject
"Works for me!" Suddenly he's pivoted into a boisterous laugh, as if intentionally drowning out the fact that they're hoping to talk about personally compromising disaster stories. But then there's a flash of realization, as if that repressed impulse to cut into the flow of conversation came back with the force of an oncoming train.
"Hey, I only call someone a kid if they're young enough to be my kid!" Garrot huffs a bit, more offended that he just called himself old than at Zafika's remark. It's not exactly a subtle fact that he's older than most of their allies by a... pretty wide margin.
At least he's not trying to be hip.
no subject
"Hm... fair enough... I guess it's just little weird to have someone call me a kid... I mean, I know I'm not old, I'm barely a proper adult but-" They suddenly pause mid sentence, and almost pause on their tracks, but that only shows as them sort of, doing this twitchy lag with continuing to move, for a split second as they realise something. "Wait, do you even know how old I am?"
"I mean... as a doctor you could technically access my... or, well, Zafika the Assassin's medical records, but even those have just an approximate age, since I never told them my actual name..." Now they're nervous, not because of the conversation the two of them will have, but because they're wondering if Garrot knows who they actually are. There should be no way for that, but they can't be sure of it. So, while their expression doesn't change, their tail does try to curl around their leg, before they forcibly swish it behind their back.
