Day 8: Morning
Morning: 6:00am - 12:00noon
[ IRL Timeframe: February 10th, 2020 - FebruaryAfter the events of Day 7 and the chaos that it brought, the heroes have learned a number of things that most of them still aren't sure they're ready to know. What will they do with their knowledge? How will they share it with each other? How will--
At about 6AM, everyone receives a text from Garrot. Anyone who saw him the evening before may be surprised to see him forming complete sentences and, uh, threatening everyone? Is he okay? Anyone brave enough to want to text him back?
What a great start to the day, an early text. But that's... surprisingly the only shake-up? It's eerily calm.
The Protector had been knocked out to sea by the Wizard, spawning a number of serious worried conversations on social media. Is he okay? Was he dead? Is it time to panic? There were plenty of memes, too. Like the wizard in the foreground with sunglasses, a golf club, and a wide smile with the protector in the background and the words "time to go golfing" memed accross the image. At least some people were still in a joking mood.
The Wizard, too, had a collection of social media posts about her current circumstances. The overall opinion was that she was way scarier than before, was she a terminator? Wizardinator?
To make matters worse, Sxicq was missing. The hashtag #childlookout was trending with almost hourly updates of the island. Sxicq didn't make themselves difficult to find, which meant that spotting them even from distant photos or drone snaps was pretty straightforward. But there was no sign of their characteristic glow or disruptions anywhere. No bigfoot-esque sightings in the back of other photos. No panic that they were eating entire restaurants' stocks of food.
Nothing.
Talk about a calm before the storm, especially since Eight had alluded to several of the heroes that there was still going to be a fight today.
It turns out to be another opportunity for the heroes to collect themselves, gather information, and get themselves on stable ground. It's warmer today, and there are passing waves of light rain all over the island. Little drizzle showers that stick around just long enough to make you seek shelter, but not so long that you wonder when it'll let up. The sun dares to peek through every now and then, occasionally at the same time as the drizzling rain.
The Weather
- Light rain.
- 68Β°F / 20Β°C
- A gentle breeze.
Prompts:
- 6:00am The Text, All Cities: "Mandatory medical exams today at 8AM at Far Haven General. The front desk will see you're escorted. You will be frisked, multiple times. Hospital staff says no weapons, no chaos. We can't piss them off.
That means nobody gets their animal companions, since some of you are idiots. They'll be left at the front door before going off on a guided tour. If you or yours don't cooperate, it will be assumed that you want to harm the Princess and you will die.
See you then!"
At about 6AM, everyone receives that text from Garrot. Anyone who saw him the evening before may be surprised to see him forming complete sentences and, uh, threatening everyone? Is he okay? Anyone brave enough to want to text him back?- 8:08am Eight, All Cities: Anyone who decides they're going to text Eight to make a plan will find that he doesn't answer any of his texts until 8:08am. He replies to everyone all at once, at exactly 8:08 and 8 seconds. Whether your hero sent one text at 6am, or eight texts between 6 and 8am, all the answers come at exactly the same time. If anyone asks to go to the garden, they'll be deposited on the landing pad in the garden... at 8:08am. Predictable.
- 9:00am The Wizard, The Garden: The Wizard can be found in the vegetable section of the garden for any heroes who go looking for her. She's tending to the plants, picking weeds, watering the beds, and preparing new sprouts to grow in the empty spaces.
- ?:00am Anywhere, All Cities: Surely your character has to be getting up to something this morning, somewhere. This is a general catchall post for any threads among heroes that occurs. Whatever your character is getting up to, however they're preparing, or however they're coping. This is the place for it. Eight said there was going to be a fight this afternoon, after all, so there's something on the horizon at least!
Procedure:

"I don't think you get it, Gyre." His voice hisses, and that same broken and unhinged look persists. "I'd love to kill the Protector, but... not at the cost of all these lives." There's a flicker of sadness and pity in his tone because for all his bluster and hate, he's still a doctor who thinks murder is usually bad. His murderous intent towards the Protector is absolutely undeniable, but... it's not actually his priority if the giga-douche isn't in the area himself.
"Destroying the planet should barely be considered a last resort." And suddenly he's glaring daggers at Gyre as his tone gets the coldest it's probably ever been to him. "Sxicq is walking and talking. We went into the past." But then, there's suddenly a sharp influx of emotion, of pleading hope into his voice, one that he couldn't repress no matter how hard he tried. "We might have better options than letting a murderer go free or condemning billions!" So he plays his hand, he voices his desire to truly and honestly pursue a better option.
"Anyone who refuses to see that, who refuses to try, is an enemy of the entire planet." The only one who fits that description so far is the Protector. So Garrot decides to push further, that hope blending with his anger in a way that's both encouraging and smothering. "Who are you protecting that isn't willing to try, Gyre? We can still convince them."
no subject
His posture only gets tighter and angrier as Garrot talks down at him like this. He can hear those waves of emotion in his voice, but the content of his words are rage inducing. The man is making so many god damn assumptions. They're coming so fast, he doesn't get the chance to address any of them until that last dismissal of everything Gyre has said today.
He jerks to his feet suddenly, snapping, "I get it just fine, Garrot." He takes a sharp breath, hands clenching in frustration. He forces himself to breathe for a beat, making his hands loosen up, dropping the shield as suddenly as he raised it.
"You just said that the Wizard has wanted to change this from the first year. Her and the monsters have been forming a plan for decades. They've tried harder than any of us, Garrot. We should be listening to their plan, and helping everyone escape this place before it dies," he snarls, gesturing around as if to indicate the entire world.
"No one is destroying this world. It's dying. It will die no matter what we do. We need to get people away from here. As many as possible. As soon as possible. Sxicq thinks we have about a year."
no subject
"Their plan sounds like the Wizard wins, and people die." If nothing else, he's not as condescending or rude or violent. That shield reminded him that he can't quite do whatever he wants, thankfully. "What if their plan doesn't work, or we can't evacuate in a year?!" Nobody else needs to die because of this game, and the wrongness of it all continues to tear at Garrot's already-exhausted emotions. Gyre's so confident about a plan, a situation he's just accepting at face value.
"Who's going to decide who lives and who dies? Us?! The Wizard?!"
no subject
"What if! What if your plan doesn't work! How can you possibly think the plan you came up with in a week is better than theirs?" He is trying so hard not to claw at himself, or leap across this room to punch Garrot in the face. The dude is suffering, but still, the pure arrogance of this man never ceases to completely astonish him. He thinks back to the talk Garrot just gave, and he suddenly feels even worse.
"Do you even have a plan??"
no subject
So it might be weird when Garrot doesn't say anything, he just crosses his arms and closes his eyes. He waits until Gyre asks if he has a plan.
"Of course I have a plan!" The words are barked out, more defensive than angry. "Sxicq hasn't been able to do anything for forty years, and they're the reason this is all happening." He sighs, knowing how useless that sounds. "Maybe now that they can walk around and try, we can come up with something that doesn't make people die every year." He scoffs, clearly dealing with his own frustrations.
"Or we just convince them to send us forty years ago."
no subject
"Forty years ago... What happened forty years ago already happened. We can't change it," he says, thinking back to what the Wizard had said at the time. She remembered him, so it had already happened. Right? Honestly, his mind spins the second he contemplates changing the past, and he shakes his head slightly, bringing his hands up to rub at his temples.
"Have you talked to Sxicq about that? They told me they were going to leave, and that we should come with them. They're..." he trails off for a moment, making a sudden frustrated noise. "They're helping Eight and Eleven today! They've already got a plan, and it's the Wizard's plan."
no subject
"But they're more powerful than the Wizard or the Protector! If anyone can keep the planet alive without the Protector, it's them!" There's an earnest, hopeful pleading in his voice. "Maybe they just don't know they can do it. I wouldn't know what I could do if I was locked up for forty years."
Maybe they just need some encouragement.
no subject
"Maybe. I mean," sigh, "Definitely they can keep the planet alive. They're the whole reason it's alive right now, not the Protector." The Protector hasn't done anything except keep the door locked on their cage, as far as he understands it.
"But they, the whole reason those two came here was because Sxicq was going to leave and take the lifeforce of the planet with them," he says, gesturing downwards to emphasize his point. "They hate the Protector, but that's not why they want to escape."
no subject
"If they're willing to fix things, maybe they can fix the planet." He furrows his brow, blending his anger and his curiosity towards one particularly miserable target. "Y'know, if Sxicq feels safe doing that. Trying."
There's only one person Garrot figures will make Sxicq feel unsafe, and he sounds like Knight Enemy #1.
no subject
"I don't think the planet needs fixing. I think it was uh, like an egg. Just a shell for Sxicq to be born from." If he's right then all the wanting in the world won't keep the lifeforce here once Sxicq leaves. He imagines that's why the Protector trapped them here in the first place. Still, he's absolutely not certain this, shaking his head slightly.
"We can talk to them though. Maybe there is a way." He shakes his head a little. He's not getting his hopes up, and he's still going to help the Wizard first, but hey maybe there is a way for this planet to live.
no subject
"So if it's like an egg, then why can't Sxicq make a smaller hole and drain their energy yolk through there?" There's even a glint in his eye as he says this. He absolutely has a plan, if not just a ton of ideas. "And if that won't work, we've got twenty-four animals and monsters made of the same stuff."
And they are, at least right now, separate from Sxicq. It looks like he'll keep throwing out optimistic ideas until he finds something that works. Maybe someone should stop him.
no subject
"Would you give your body and blood up to your captors? You think they're going to give any of their power up to us? Especially if that means they can't leave." He pauses for a moment, letting Garrot add the even more grotesque thought of draining the animals and the monsters.
"No! They've given enough of themselves! What is wrong with you!"
no subject
"Not like that!" There's an edge in his voice, a pain with his objection. "Sxicq might not have to destroy everything to leave! A bunch of ocean or even just this island would be easier to evacuate than the whole world!"
He takes a deep breath, not planning on stopping there.
"And we don't have to trap or hurt anyone. If Sxicq can have a body without blowing up the planet, then..." He grits his teeth for a moment, unwilling to let go of his hopes for a happier resolution. "Then why can't the people that were pieces of them?!" But then he takes a long breath out.
Problem solving is hard enough when Garrot is bad at words, let alone when the problems are on a cosmic scale he struggles to comprehend...
no subject
"Garrot," he says clearly and firmly, trying to bring the man's head back down out of the clouds. "Sxicq told me that the world will crumble after they leave. They aren't going to... to blow the planet up!" Nothing so dramatic as an explosion, which is the thing that makes this that much harder.
"It's just going to die. Even if they do put some of their magic into it, what happens when that magic dries up? We're just going to put off the inevitable, I think."
no subject
"Sxicq won't have to leave!" Suddenly, the sunny, hopeful inspiration is back. Garrot looks at Gyre, he grins mischievously, and suddenly oh look, there's another Monkey Knight peeking out from behind him. "If I can be in two places at once, they can do it better!" The words come out in stereo, followed immediately by a victorious little cackle.
"Then the planet doesn't have to die and Sxicq can still leave!" He's still grinning! Even wider! "And if the Sxicq in the planet keeps getting worse, they can just..." A beat passes, and suddenly another Garrot pops out from behind his other shoulder. And they all speak together: "...make another one!"
no subject
"Why do you think they should have to leave any piece of themself here. They've been trapped here already. They're aren't going to want to imprison themself here again!" he snaps back, his hands tightening into fists in frustration.
"Have you even seen them duplicate themself before??"
no subject
"You're trying to talk me down from asking." The words are curt and controlled, a conscious decision to try and keep Gyre from throwing punches, but those same words are coming in fast. Garrot sees those fists, and he will happily break them if this doesn't course-correct. "Their eyes turn into fire. They don't have to do anything. I can't force them. But I can give them ideas. Maybe they'll listen." There's a forceful exhale of air from his nose, an attempt at releasing the tension that makes him want to pounce and rip that elf's mouthy little throat out. He's dead, it'd just grow back anyway. And there'd be a mess.
"Sxicq fixed a hospital they plan on destroying in a few days. They've answered my questions multiple times." Garrot puts his hands at his waist, ever-so-close to a superhero pose; he knows he's in the right here. "They're willing to help, so I'm going to ask them everything I can," and suddenly he's glaring at the elf. "I'm not looking back on this and thinking I could've done more to help people. That I didn't try hard enough." Despite the glaring and the posturing, Garrot has a hint of desperation in his voice. Gyre's heart is in the right place, but...
"I can't just accept whatever the Protector and Wizard or you tell me is possible. Nobody knows everything." Gyre wouldn't know it for sure, but Garrot's actually quoting the Wizard! "You keep assuming you know what Sxicq wants, but you were surprised by what I had to say. You're not in charge, and I'm not trying to get your permission." Garrot's got thirty seconds, tops, before he starts throwing punches. In the hospital that he cordoned off.
"So are you gonna keep this going, or can I go grieve?" Yep, he's playing the Dead Dad Card! That's how much he wants to leave, Gyre. Because the alternative would be, well, a lot more violent. And in front of everyone.
no subject
Much like the last time Garrot went off on him after failing to listen, Gyre gets more and more angry with him as he goes, nearly giving off heat as he glares furiously up at him. His whole body is tensed, his hands clenched tight. For just a moment, his knuckles unfold, but only long enough for him to clench them even harder. He reaches this absolute fever pitch, an anger so intense he actually has no idea what to do with it.
And then it just ices over. His eyes go cold, and while he doesn't lose any tension in his body, he stops leaning forward like he's a split second from leaping at him. There's a heavy beat of silence here after Garrot plays the Dead Dad Card, Gyre expression remaining exactly the same.
Then all at once, he makes his eyes real big, switching to a soft, simpering tense of Amarosian normally used to speak to direct superiors. It's the tense his COs demanded from him, and he uses it with an deep, dry sarcasm. "γWhen you do talk to them, maybe please consider for a moment whether you should ask a prisoner to stay in their prison for your comfort, ~please~?γ"
And just as suddenly as he switched, his expression darkens again. He finishes with a sharp, terse snap, "γNo one's keeping you here. Fuck off.γ"
no subject
Garrot doesn't say a word as he walks to the door, making conscious effort to slam the side of his body into Gyre as he passes except, well, he doesn't look back. He stomps right out the door, and a good fifteen feet down the hall there's the smash of what's most likely a fist pounding through some poor, defenseless drywall.
But Garrot's absolutely gone. And next time, he might not invite that insolent boar of a knight...
