Welcome to the Test Drive! In this post, you'll be able to interact with others to get a feeling for your character. All threads below will be considered non-canon unless otherwise stated. Multiple different scenarios are available, you are welcome to post multiple comments with different scenarios each or post one single comment containing different scenarios.
i n s t r u c t i o n s • Post with your character (note character name in the subject). • Other people reply to you by picking a number from the scenarios in the subject line. • Have fun!
o p t i o n s 01 • AWAKENING. Your character has just woken up, or turned a corner, or blinked and now their animal companion has joined them. How do they react? What were they doing beforehand? How are they going to handle the news that they're a knight now? For this thread, you'll be threading with your animal companion. (You must provide the thread-start for this option)
02 • ON THE PLANE. You were promised a seat on a plane out to the island but it looks like you and another Knight (or the Princess) were double-booked! Chat it up with your fellow fighter, commentary from your animal companions is optional.
03 • THE ISLAND. You've just landed and you're somewhere on the island. One of your fellow companions is nearby and they sure do look like they've just landed with all their luggage still in tow. Or they're already wearing an Island tourism shirt. Or who even knows, but you're both here!
04 • COFFEE SHOP. All you wanted was a Latte, or a Frappuccino, to consider why you're here on the island and what you were going to do until the first monster showed up... Instead the barista called for "Drink for the Knight" or "Drink for the Princess" oh shit, but this isn't your drink! Or maybe it is your drink but someone else is there! Why would two knights have gone for coffee at the same time? Or did you get confused for or with the Princess? Come on, man, there are only so many unicorn frappes in the world.
05 • DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort. Go for a walk, go outside, looks like you're not alone in your discomfort. New island housing is wild!
06 • PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. First night on the island is rough. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?
07 • BEACH EPISODE. You're on an island!! There's beaches everywhere, there are pools on every street. Endless water opportunities, chances to fool around and relax before things get serious. You're not the only good guy to have had this thought! What are you both up to?
08 • LOCAL FOOD. You've been dying to eat X, a dish that you've seen numerous other knights eat on TV. Now YOU'RE a knight (or the princess) and you're eating it yourself, there are kids at home that'll be excited to eat this food because they saw you eating it! You might even get a commercial spot to advertise this food when you get home. Awesome! Except someone else is here, what if they get the commercial spot? Huh.
09 • DENNY'S. It's 3am and you've arrived at a Denny's. You're almost certain that there's not a Denny's on the island and you're not even sure you walked in here? But it is what it is and the server is already bringing you a menu and taking your drink order as one of your fellow allies slips into the booth across from you. Have you met them before, or are they new to you? Your animal companion is here, too, and they're ordering something as well.
10 • WILDCARD. Choose one of the options above, or make up your own scenario. |
Red Leaves Gyre on the Grey Lake
01. Awakening
[Gyre fell asleep late last night, and he wakes up late because of it. The afternoon sun hits him fully in the face before he blinks and turns over in his sleeping bag. He wants a few more minutes. Just a little more, please. He knows he needs to hunt today, and he needs to finish his journey to his little home to check up on it, and he always hates meditating too late in the day, but just a minute or two more]
[He can't. Now that he's awake, he can feel sweat pooling in the small of his back and one sharp blade of grass digging into his neck. He sighs deeply, a harsh rattle in his throat, and he forces himself up sitting, still wrapped tight in his sleeping bag. Give him a second, Fen. He'll blink the sleep out of his eyes soon]
05. Discomfort
[There is no fucking way he's sleeping in a bed tonight. He laid down for about thirty seconds before his back started hurting. The cushions are too soft and he hates the pure luxury of it all. Who needs a bed like that? Who needs three pillows for a single head!]
[So he scrabbled together the pajamas the Wizard provided him, and now there is a wild elf loitering under the blue magic streetlamps out in front of whatever hotel he got shoved into. He's listening to crickets chirp and pacing, walking through the hotel's little garden path. And then doing it again. And again. Maybe he'll just sleep out in the flowerbeds tonight. That's a thing that's totally reasonable to do, right?]
07. Beach Episode
[Hey! It's beach time! Gyre doesn't get to see the beach very often, so he's taking the best advantage of it he can right now. Which is to say, he's laying in the sand, just out of reach of the waves. He's either wearing very small shorts or absolutely nothing at all beside his collar depending on what you want this scene to be. Either way, he's covered in tattoos and there are some pretty bad scars in his shoulder and his stomach. His legs are spread wide, his arms stretched up over his head, his whole body sprawled as wide as he can. He just looks like he's melting delightedly in the sunshine basically someone definitely needs to come mess with him]
Or any of the others are good too!
Re: Red Leaves Gyre on the Grey Lake
Low and behold though, Gyre wasn't actually the only one outside. Seth was there too...along with one of his about human sized puppets who he was anxiously signing to, and then moving the puppets hands to sign back.
To someone like Gyre who actually knew sign language the conversation was going about as follows: "I can't just kick them out of the bed! They claimed it the moment we got here, besides you know what a tantrum they'll throw if they have to sleep anywhere but on a plush bed!" "Seth you're a goddamn knight now, you need to sleep if you're going to survive this. Marion will just have to settle for the sofa." "But I could sleep on the sofa too..."
no subject
He watches the boy for a good long moment, tilting his head in deep confusion when Seth starts signing back to himself with the puppet's hands. What in the absolute world...? This kid was a knight, right? He does vaguely remember seeing him before, he thinks.
It's almost a full minute of just watching before he finally decides to approach, pulling the key to his hotel room out of his pocket. He's assuming Seth is deaf at this point, so instead of calling out to him, he just drops the key in front of Seth's face. Once he's got his attention, he'll sign, "You can take that room."
no subject
"You know sign language? Oh god I'm so sorry you had to see that I didn't think anyone was here- wait are you offering your room? Oh gods no I couldn't, where would you sleep? Really I can just sleep on my room's sofa- Oh god this is embarrassing, it's weird right? You don't have to pretend I know everyone thinks it's weird-"
He was pretty much doing his version of rambling now, pretty mortified to have been caught "conversing" with one of his puppets, all to aware how people tended to think of his puppet hobby, and that was without stuff like this!
Though considering how rattled and mortified he seemed if the signs were anything to go by, his face remained oddly expressionless, aside from perhaps gaining a red tint to his cheeks.
no subject
The sign is quick and blunt, his eyebrow rising very slightly as he watches Seth move like that. Frantically, almost. This kid must not get to talk to a lot of people. There is this little flicker of pity across his face as he brings his hands up, more insistent this time.
"It's not my room. I'm not going to use it. You can give it to your roommate, if you want." Either way seems like it'll work fine to him, but that's because he doesn't realize that Marion is not uhh a real person.

Matilda's found herself a nice little bench to sit at in her ridiculous frilly nightgown, and she's full out sobbing. Choking on her tears, there's some snot involved-- it's full out and it's gross. He might want to run while he can-- oh, wait, she's seen him, and it hasn't stopped her crying.]
no subject
[And there she is. And the sight of her makes him immediately angry? He's not exactly sure why, but the frilly nightgown is definitely part of it. Despite the distress gripping his chest, he wants to leave her to her tears for just a brief, brief moment]
[Wait no she's seen him. Fuck. Okay, he can't let her just keep weeping. What if something's really wrong? He begins approaching, looking her over, his voice this deep baritone purr: ]
Are you hurt?
no subject
N-no, not exactly... [She does a big sniff, peering up at him with big watery eyes.]
no subject
Uh... okay. [He's immediately tempted to leave, and he does turn slightly as if he's just going to walk the fuck away like a jerk]
Not exactly?

You, uh... you alright there, pal? [ Garrot's eyes, sporting similarly dark sclera, scan up and down his friend-to-be. The tattoos are awesome and the scars are, uh, worrying from a medical standpoint. But they look cool too. Garrot doesn't want to say that he thinks the guy looks like an awesome video game character, but. He sips his beer and then he's grinning. This is wild. ]
Just sayin', I'm a doctor.
no subject
[Wait]
[His eyes snap open at the sound of Garrot's voice, his brow furrowing immediately at him. Who stands in front of someone's sun??? And calls themself a doctor as they do it?? This dude has got to know how insanely huge he is, right?]
Are you prescribing me less sun, doctor? [Have a pointed gesture with his head. Take like three steps to the right, dude]
no subject
I doubt you have any sunscreen in those shorts of yours. [ There's no audible sound of his eyebrow raising, but Garrot lets out a condescending sigh before digging one of his feet into the sand a bit. What? It's fun. ]
I mean, you don't want to get sunburn, do you? [ There's a sneering little scoff. ] The dead skin gets so nasty...
no subject
[He ends up just tilting his head slightly, gesturing down to his shorts with the one long black claw he's got]
Did you want to check for me, doctor.

7 BEACH TIME
"Hey there! Can I ask ya to keep an eye on my shit for a bit? Just don't want nobody thinkin' that they can just walk off with it, I like this jacket a lot." She plops the clothing down nearby Gyre without waiting for a response then just kinda gestures to all of him.
"Cool tattoos, by the by."
no subject
"Mmhm," he hums, knowing his tattoos are cool and apparently deciding the compliment doesn't need acknowledging. "I'll watch it while I'm here."
no subject
"You plannin' to swim at all? I gotta say, the water is great here, way clearer than back home. Pretty sure I saw a sea lion way out there too!"
no subject
At the mention of a sea lion though, he perks up immediately, pushing himself up onto his elbows and looking wide-eyed out at the water.
"You saw one?" He's never really seen big ocean mammals before and his eyes are shining in anticipation all of a sudden.

[Terrence hadn't really met most of the other knights just yet, so maybe this would be a good chance, though the coddlingly comfy pink pajamas he has on might not do him many favors with this particular one. Still, he folds his arms and leans against one of the lamp posts like he plans to be there for a little while.]
I'm completely thrown off, myself.
no subject
Oh. [...here come some assumptions!] I imagine we're having very different problems.
no subject
I imagine so! I don't think I've ever been too comfortable! I think I follow what you mean, though... Used to things being a bit more spartan back home?
no subject
Everything is too comfortable here.

01.
Sleeping so much, did I get a sleepy knight? I guess I can get used to sleeping a lot, this grass is certainly comfortable. [ And just like that they're settling into the grass in front of his face where he's laying in his sleeping bag. ]
You're not moving because you're sleeping, some of my knights stopped moving because they weren't alive but that's okay! It's a new year, you're a new knight! This is going to be a great year, I just know it!
no subject
[By the time he sits up, he's basically decided the voice was all in his head and he doesn't respond to Fen at all as he begins to unzip his sleeping bag. He only glances over at his latest animal friend, and... actually pauses there. The boar is enormous, the broad hulk of its shoulders even taller then he is sitting, and there are multiple curling tusks jutting forward and backward, a twist of nastiness he feels nervous just looking at. If he was a more superstitious elf, he'd be certain this was a forest spirit visiting him and he can't help blurting out: ]
Good morning. [He looks stunned here for a good long second, before he turns slightly. He must have a knife nearby. If he could kill this big thing, he wouldn't need to hunt for like a week holy shit holy shit hopefully his movement doesn't scare it off]
no subject
It's you! Good morning! It's nice to meet you! Hello there, I hope you had a good sleep! [ Giving a happy hop despite their size, they start slowly circling him to look him over now that he's out of his sleeping bag. Did they get another sleepy knight after all or was he prepared? ]
no subject
Uh... [His hand loosens up in the grass, abandoning his knife in his confusion. He blinks several times as the dust poffs up into the air, and this giant boar moves like it... like they? weigh a third what they do. Have a long stunned silence before he speaks: ]
It was fine. Who are you? [Some spirit come to give him a mission or something? He should've paid closer attention to his mother's tales as a boy ugh]
