Day 3: Evening
Evening: 5:00pm - Midnight
[ IRL Timeframe: June 16th toNo matter when the heroes defeated their monsters, or when the sixth monster was defeated and there were none left, everyone will be treated to an unfortunately familiar feeling. The world of the past will fade, slowly at first but gradually increasing in pace until they pass out to blackness.
Everyone will wake up on a beach, and not a beach in the town their residence is in. Looks like everyone will need to take the train back home or go for a really, really long walk.
More unsettling than that is that every hero will either have a decent suntan or a mild sunburn. Social media is abuzz with comments about the island "going still" and the knights "dead on the beaches". There are reports that all twelve knights and the princess were all defeated at the same time and left on the beaches as an advertisement that the world was over this year.
Naturally, the heroes will realize that they are not, in fact, dead. Better do some damage control, there. Anyone who tried to make any recordings in the past will find that the files are corrupted and unavailable. Looks like whatever happened is going to... stay in the past.
The heroes who are due for an evening visit in the Princess' Dream Citadel or in The Wizard's House will arrive there the moment they sleep.
The Weather
- Warmer than yesterday.
- 77°F / 25°C
- Everyone's in a bit of a panic!
Prompts:
- 05:00pm Beach Wake-up Call: Every hero will wake up laying on the wet sand of the beach. There's waves gently lapping at them, waking them up slowly from their abrupt return from the past. Everyone will feel a little groggy and their clothes will be uncomfortably crusted in sand. Here's to hoping that saltwater and sand will wash out? Make sure to remove the little crabs that have started crawling over you!
- 5:00pm, Craydon: The residents of Craydon are all safely at home up the mountain by now. The only people still lingering around the Craydon beaches are fishermen working to prepare for their sunset runs. The offshore cages aren't going to empty themselves, after all! Fortunately this means they have, and can offer, blankets and hot drinks while they're heading out. It's not much, but they're here to help. At least the heroes are hopefully not alone?
- 5:00pm, Bamborough: The residents of Bamborough are really just the locals, concerned for the future of the world and of the heroes. Instead of waking up alone, they'll find little boxes of dry towels and bottled water beside them. Looks like the residents were pretty sure they were going to wake up at some point because they've left little kits to help them wake up with. It's not much, but it's better than nothing. The boardwalks of Bamborough are empty, with not a single soul out and about. The local shops, though, are pretty much business as usual. They'll immediately bustle in excitement when the heroes show themselves. Also: Free showers near the beach boardwalks! Better get all that crusty sand cleaned off.
- 5:00pm, Far Haven: The city of Far Haven is simultaneously the most cold and impersonal and the most immediately helpful. Each hero in Far Haven will wake up with a little walkie talkie beside them. If they pick it up and reach out, they'll be immediately told to come to the Far Haven hospital for immediate medical assistance. Once there, they'll be offered a free shower, water, hydration, a medical checkup, and a free coupon for the Craydon hot springs. There are even little kits set out for the knights in other towns. But... there's no one to bring them to the other towns, whoops. Guess they're carry-out only?
- 5:35pm onward, Train station(s): The train has a pretty reliable schedule for the evening, ending in Far Haven at 11:25pm. One way or another, the train is going to be how your hero makes their way back home to sleep for the night. Will the ride be uneventful, or will it be spent with others?
• Bamborough: 6:45pm, 8:30pm, 10:15pm.
• Craydon: 7:20pm, 9:05pm, 10:50pm.
• Far Haven: 6:10pm, 7:55pm, 9:40pm, 11:25pm.- 6:00pm, Bamborough: In the outdoor seating area of Slyder's Wizard Sliders, a Wizard-themed burger restaurant in the most touristy area of Bamborough near the waterfront, the Wizard herself is seated at one of the tables under a big umbrella. Despite the big umbrella, she's still wearing her massive hat: Double shade from the setting sun. Sitting on the table is a small wizard-themed drink with little lightning bolts sticking out of the blue liquid.
- 8:00pm, Far Haven: Social media is quick to add the #wizardsighting hashtag to posts made by officers at the police station in Far Haven. The Wizard is seated up on the rooftop ledge of the police station, legs dangling over the third floor edge, surrounded by fireflies sparkling in the night. All a hero has to do is tell an officer they'd like to go up to talk to the Wizard and they'll be escorted to the elevator to the roof. Up you go, heroes!

"Come on... yes!" His face lights up, and Garrot's grinning ear-to-ear as he holds his phone facing himself. A video call? "Hey- yeah, I'm fine, I promise." A beat. "Look, if they thought we were dead, they could've checked for a pulse first!" He laughs, loud and boisterous and completely disregarding the world around him. But then he sighs, becoming solemn.
"There was... weird Wizard magic today. It's hard to explain on my own, but..." It's kind of difficult to explain Wizard-triggered time travel and children in obelisks and arm monsters in one day. And then all of sudden he looks offended. "I said I was fine! If you think I look rough, you should've seen that monster!" Once more, Garrot looses a booming laugh that sounds just a little forced.
[ I figure people can tell him to be less Loud, shoot the shit about time travel, or try to engage with the phone call and watch Garrot get very embarrassed. I'll roll with whatever. ]
no subject
Which, they eventually decide to do, even if they're feeling the tiniest bit awkward. Before Garrot can get to the train, Zafika quickly approaches him, but doesn't get within an arm's reach of him. "Garrot? Everything okay?" They haven't taken a look at him yet, but they can smell the sea on him, and with the monster having been what it was, they feel like they should ask out of courtesy if he's alright. And out of actual concern, because they know Garrot can fight, but nasty worries happen either way.
no subject
"Oh! Uh..." He does jump a bit, still a little surprised. "Yeah, I'm fine! I, uh..." Garrot starts to smirk, turning the phone so both himself and part of Zafika are in frame. "Hacked through a monster and all its arms with a sword taller than you!" A beat passes, and he glances towards his phone. "Probably taller than you two, even!"
The two on the phone are clearly unfazed by the boast, but a pair of golden eyes close in on the camera, a manual zoom function. "Primary Caregiver, is that the Snake Knight?!" "Let us talk to the Snake Knight, Legal Guardian!" And then, in unison, "Pleeeeease?" Garrot just sighs, glancing to the ground for a moment before looking at Zafika and shrugging. Youths...
no subject
Meaning they don't pay it any mind that he sounds startled, and instead listen to his boasting. Which, probably would be more impressive if they weren't so tiny, but still, a person sized sword is big. They sure wouldn't want one pointed at them.
Only when they register the 'taller than you two' bit, do they realise that Garrot must be talking to his kids, and they decide lower their blindfold to hang around their neck. And yep, there sure are two golden eyes peering at them from the screen of Garrot's phone. They give Garrot an understanding look, before waving briefly at the kids. "Yes, it's me, the Snake Knight. I can talk for a bit, but... I don't want your father to miss his train."
They glance at the still stationed train, it doesn't seem like it'll leave just yet, but better keep an eye on it. And an ear on it too. Just in case.
no subject
"Not our dad." Garrot himself tenses for a moment, glancing awkwardly at the phone, as if he expects things to devolve. Instead, they shrug it off and are right back to smiling. "We're, uh, kinds fans of your work? The part where you got people the law wouldn't." "Or, uh, the part where a lot of your work helped the greater good." One of the teenage boys looks to Garrot, and laughs awkwardly. He's staring at them. "Not the murder part, though. That's bad."
Garrot just. Facepalms. Starstruck teenage boys are a handful. But then the other twin leans in a bit, grinning ear to ear. "Can you beat Garrot in a fight?!" Hearing this makes the palm attach itself to his face like an alien lifeform, and the doctor just sighs. But there's still a wide, toothy grin poking out from beneath the hand, so at least he's not angry.
no subject
Zafika immediately glances at Garrot, unsure how to take this. There's clearly no blood relation, so the boys are adopted, but they didn't expect them to react that strongly. But, they're right back to smiling, and it's a weird feeling to have two kids say they're a fan of their work. "Oh, um, thank you...? The murder part is definitely bad, I don't recommend it." Olivia and Haizea being 'fans' of their work is different than two kids, never mind the fact that they're Garrot's kids.
A smile tugs at the corner of their mouth at the question, and they look at Garrot quickly again, and luckily he doesn't seem angry, if they can say anything based on that wide grin on his face. "Well, I don't know about an actual fight, but I did beat him few times while sparring, that's something I guess."
no subject
"I won too, you kn-" Garrot is, uh, entirely drowned out by the boys' excitement. So he just. Closes his mouth and looks a little grumpy. Fine. Whatever!! But the twins are undaunted, they make Garrot do grumpy faces all the time. So they just keep going.
"Since you beat Garrot, you must be really good." "So awesome, Wolfie!" The twin that just spoke then switches from cheering to laughing and proceeds to recline backwards and fall over a chair while cackling like a hyena. "Careful, Leon! So, uh. Do you think, when this is all over, you could- uh." Leon cannot be stopped, and instead hollers out "Let us spar with you! Please?"
Garrot is almost entirely unfazed. Teenage boys are a handful, especially these two. So he just looks to Zafika and lightly shrugs. Their call, of course, but as always the doctor doesn't seem concerned with what'll happen to Zafika's freedom after the Wizard's defeated.
no subject
Except uh. One of the kids, apparently named Leon, topples over on his chair while cackling like a hyena, and it's surprisingly contagious, on top of him falling over. Contagious enough that they have to muffle a snort behind their hand too, but now they're openly smiling.
"Well, no power in this world can get me to Koskenkorva, but if your Primary Caregiver is willing to help out with bringing you somewhere else, I could maybe spar with you." If they still get to go free after this, if they survive. Things are crazy enough that they don't want to make assumptions about anyone's survival. But this is good enough of a promise without actually promising them anything.
But oh look, they're joining the boys' joke of calling Garrot anything but 'dad'.
no subject
"Wait, so Proud Patriarch, does that mean-" "Yes, Wolfgang, we can go on-" And suddenly, Leon is back, and he's deadpan. "A violence vacation." "Yes." As if they weren't in the middle of a video call, the boys jump up and are loudly shouting "Violence Vacation!" over and over again until suddenly they're running off elsewhere into the house to. Do something???? Right before they get out of frame, one of them shouts a "Fuck yeah!" and, uh...
"Language, boys..." Garrot rolls his eyes, clearly not expecting them to hear him. "Sorry, they do this sorta thing- they'll probably be back in a minute." It is entirely unclear if they get excited to go on combat trips or if they just walk away from conversations with Garrot. But then the doctor redirects his focus to the person next to him, eyes and voice clearly concerned. "Are they too much? I'll hang up if you want me to." They've both had one hell of a day, that's for sure.
no subject
And then the shouting starts, and they stare at the phone in disbelief, watching the boys go, apeshit. Pretty fitting for the kids of this year's Monkey Knight. When Garrot turns to speak to them, however, they turn to look at him, and they still have this look of sort of amused disbelief on their face. "I feel like I missed half of what they were saying at the end even though they were only screaming violence vacation..."
"But, no, don't worry, they're not too much. It's... honestly a nice distraction and change from today. But while I have just your attention... are you okay? I didn't have a proper chance to check up with you before.." Being completely alone with Garrot again feels awkward, but only a little. They're tired enough to not care that much, and they do want to check up on him still. It's been a long day for everyone.
no subject
"The boys are normally calmer, but..." He shrugs, the warm smile on his face faltering for just a moment. "My oldest is taking things in stride, but... for all I know the twins haven't left the house or worked out since I left." Garrot just sighs, and his mood starts to deflate. "I wouldn't let them come with me, so they're doing whatever they can to help me from home." And then suddenly his free hand goes into one of his pockets, while the other holds the phone at his side, as if the video call was over. The doctor's looking straight down at the ground.
"I'm not okay, Zafika." He lets out a short, sharp sigh. "We went back in time, I couldn't get in touch with my father, there's weird kids in magic rocks, and everyone thought I was dead." His shoulders slump a bit more. "All I want is to hold my family and hear their heartbeats but I can't," his jaw tightens, his teeth are clenched, and there's a hint of snarl to his voice. "Because I was an idiot who made them all stay home so that if I die then it won't hurt as much when they've all lost another parent to this bullshit."
That's a lot, both to process and to word vomit, so Garrot's taking a moment to just, uh, breathe. If he's angry at anyone, it's himself.
no subject
She whips around, petite gloved hands balled, ready to fight someone-- on the phone with their family or not. "Must you?!"
no subject
"You wanna go?!" It's not until he snarls out the words that he realizes who he's dealing with. Matilda. The hand holding the phone drops to his side as he gasps. The woman on the other end is shouting, clearly displeased. "DAD, what the fuck?!" He does not register her words consciously.
Garrot sees the phone, remembers what she said about her family. And he worries. "M-Matilda! Are... are you okay?" Physically? Emotionally? Personally? His question was almost whispered, and his wide eyes and loosening of his stance makes him look about to snatch her up into a hug.
It sounds like the woman on the phone didn't pick up on the change, because now she's shouting. "Dad I swear, if you look, smell, and act like a stray dog we're sending you to the pound!" Garrot does notice that one, but he keeps the phone at his side and just... smiles sheepishly at Matilda.
no subject
Thankfully, the moment is ruined by the pound comment, and Matilda can't help but let out a rather unrefined snort. "Your laughter was so vociferous- the entire island could feel it!" She quips, bending to pick up his phone for him. He's gigantic, she wonders if he'd be able to get it himself. Don't mind her as she flashes a smile at the screen before offering it back to him. "Don't worry, he's a friendly puppy!"
no subject
"A puppy?! I guess he does eat whatever he can get his claws on..." Garrot just. Shrugs. It's a true statement. The young woman, however, brushes a few strands of black hair from her face and smirks, far more composed than Garrot on his best days.
"But a dog joke from the Dog Knight? Well played, Matilda Hamilton. I'm Miri, his daughter. I'd shake your hand, but-" A flash of realization strikes her, and that smirk looks a bit meaner. "Dad, be a good dog and shake, would you?"
For a brief moment, Garrot stares into the distance, truly dumbfounded by what his life has become. Raising children is a great idea, he told himself! "this-is-stupid-are-you-fucking-kidding-me-miri-is-this-revenge-for-the-costume-party-last-year-it-was-a-JOKE-where-did-I-go-wrong-with-you" is grumbled out, ornery and rapid-fire, as he reaches out for a handshake with his neighbor who he already knows. Garrot's eyes are pleading with Matilda to humor his daughter. Free him from this joke of a situation.
no subject
She’s about to stammer that it’s not really necessary, but Matilda’s more than happy to appease Garrot’s daughter for him, and he gets an over enthusiastic shake of the hand— beaming. “It’s nice to meet you too!” She manages to regain her manners, even in such an absurd situation, completely ignoring the muttering beside her. “He’s... mostly harmless, right?”
no subject
"I'm not harmless! I can handle myself! I've cut bloodied limbs off of monsters!" Garrot sounds desperate to prove himself, because he knows exactly where this is going. And he's turning red!
"Dad, you know I love you but if I can kick your ass any day of the week, you're harmless." Garrot releases a whimpering gasp as his pride is further wounded, and suddenly his free arm is flexing and he's flashing his pointy teeth at the camera as if to say take me seriously please, I am a big scary man who can lift heavy things.
Poor Matilda, really, for witnessing this.
no subject
She makes a quiet squeak of a noise as Garrot flexes, leaning slightly away from him-- but she seems to be in too much of a daze to respond, as she can't help but let her mind wander to imagine Miri and Garrot fighting and Miri winning and---
Poor Matilda indeed.
no subject
"HA! I win, Miri!" Garrot is loud and triumphant, but that comes to a dead halt as he notices the look of growing horror on his daughter's face, especially once her gaze starts to flit back and forth between Matilda and his flexing arm.
"Dad, what the fuck, did your gross animal smells just kill the Dog Knight?!" Garrot recoils, not in offense but in terror, as he gently pokes Matilda on the arm. This poor girl is made of lace and scented candles or something, so Matilda might actually be dead!
Or at least vaguely unconscious. He's still worried for her.
no subject
"I was impressed, by the-- uh--" her eyes flick from Garrot, back to the phone. "Staring."
no subject
"Matilda..." Miri cuts right past Garrot's presence, leveling her eyes at the Dog Knight. "I'd be more than happy to stare at you if you wanted to tell me about those cute goggles." The elven woman giggles like an experienced fey seductress and just... smiles a teensy bit more than before.
"You know." Garrot's deep and gruff voice threatens to smash right through Miri's feminine wiles. "I've been curious about that too, kid." And now they're both staring at her.
no subject
"I'm of age!" She quips quickly, fidgeting with the goggles just slightly. "Um, what did you want to know about them? They are a little anomalous as an accessory, I must admit."
no subject
"Your social media posts make it obvious that you're a fashion-conscious woman. So why do your outfits include not just goggles, which are as anomalous as you say, but a set with pink lenses? Seems like there's a story to tell." There's a beat, and a slight shift in the angle of Miri's camera. She's got a pen and paper, apparently about to take notes. Garrot, upon seeing this, just rolls his eyes and chuckles. Pushy, intrusive Garrot is showing zero signs of wanting to pushily intrude. Instead, he just takes out his other phone with his other hand and, holding it halfway up his chest so Matilda can't see, types a quick message.
"But please share whatever you're comfortable with, I don't mean to pry of course." And then Miri just tilts her head slightly and bats her eyelashes. She absolutely means to pry, she'll just be charming about it. Then, as if her phone just previewed a text message on her end, the elf's eyes dart up to skim it, and then there's the slightest roll as they focus back on those goggles.
no subject
"The frames are vintage, of course. And the lenses-- they aren't pink." Her nose scrunches slightly as if it's a distinction she's made before. "They're rose! There was this story, I heard it as a girl, about someone with rose colored glasses. I've always loved it in the most guileless of ways. So, the lenses, they're a custom addition. And when I wear them, I don't feel so..." She trails off, before realizing how vulnerable she's being with her sincerity. She rocks back and forth on her heels, glancing back at Garrot suddenly to make sure he's not laughing at her. "It's like a lucky charm."
no subject
"I do so adore stories." She sighs dreamily. "They carry history, they turn the mundane into the mythical, and two people can tell the same one in wildly different ways." Then, she leans her phone against... something out of frame. Her hands gently pull her hair back behind her ears, and now a few streaks of silver are visible among her long, black locks. Aside from a few simpler earrings, each earlobe holds up a simple silvery figure-eight ensnared by meticulously crafted dark blue brambles.
"These are a memento of my mother. She loved them, and never told me why. It wasn't until I was older that I did some research, and it turned out to be symbology for an ancient Elven goddess of truth and justice." There's the slightest chuckle. "When I wear them, I feel like my mom's still here." Miri might want to get all the juicy journalistic details about this year's chosen, but... clearly she doesn't mind being a little vulnerable herself.
"And me?" Garrot chimes in, causing his daughter to sharply inhale as her eyes go wide, "They got a whole different story for me." "dad" "See, we went to a Sinful Eternity concert, and Miri had twisted her ankle so she was on crutches." "dad please" "And she went to put on the earrings once we got past the metal detectors and this fuckin' punk snatched the box right out of her hands-" "dad CAN YOU NOT" Miri is shouting, and uh, Garrot starts being louder. "So Miri's all like dad help! and obviously I chase after the guy, and I don't know if you've ever been chased by me before" "dad I give up" "but long story short I did a flying elbow and that scum-sucking little swamp shit was in the hospital for a month." "thank goodness it's over" "And the reason I told this story is because it's the first time Miri ever called me Dad!"
Miri is now bright, bright red, brighter than those rose-tinted goggles and brighter than a sunset and her hands are covering her face and there's just this angry whimper. Her cool kid facade is shattered by Garrot's well-timed counter-embarrassment. He was waiting for a chance like this all along, wasn't he? Garrot is absolutely laughing now, but every moment he takes to catch his breath he's looking at his daughter and beaming like a proud parent. Because he is one.
